hell-o!
okay, now we need advice for our beijing leg of the trip.
we'll be there for 5 days, then traveling out to xian and shanghai, before returning for another 4.5 days(flight out home at 4pm on last day).

01. is this too long to stay in beijing? should we allocate more days to go someplace else instead?
02. we're looking at Beijing Far East International Youth Hostel. has anyone stayed there beore? any good?
03. here're a list of places to visit we've come up with:
- tiananmen sq
- forbidden city
- peking opera show
- ding/qing/ming tombs
- great wall (badaling)
- sumer palace
- natural history museum
- national center for performing arts
- china national grand theatre
- beihai park
- temple of heaven
- bird's nest stadium
-peking man caves
- mao zedong mausoleum
- national museum of china (closed for renovations?)
- back lakes
- national aquatics centre
- beijing art museum
- marco polo bridge

are all these places worth visiting? anyplace else to add to the list.
we've been doing research online, if anyone could give us some links to good resources that'd be awesome ;)

Beijing How to get form Beijing airpot to hotelm on Wanfujing
Posted: Tue September 1, 2009 06:49 AM UTC
Hi,

Is there hotel transfer service from the airport to hotels in the city? My flight arrives a little after 8:00 p.m. If there is such a service, where is it at the airport and how much is it?

If there is no such service, where at the airport would I be able to catch a legitimate taxi and the approximate cost?

My main concern is not to get into a fake taxi.

Beijing Where to stay in Beijing
Posted: Mon August 31, 2009 08:22 AM UTC
Hi;
I'm planning a stopover of 1 week in Beijing and was wondering, since I've no knowledge of Beijing's geographic/historical layout, which section of Beijing I should stay in. Besides the usual historic treasures i.e., Forbidden City, Tiananmen Sq., The Great Wall and others, our family enjoys outdoor markets, shopping, restaurants. If you know sections of Bejing and hotels that will best help us enjoy our stay I would like to hear from you.

hello, I'm going to stay in Beijing on the 1st October. I have read that is the National Day and this and the following two days Chinesse are on holiday,so lots of people are goning to be aroung all the monument etc.. on the city.

So i have two questions. There are any way to avoid too many people?? REally Those days all Beijing is going to be full of people? you know i have wait so many years to go to China, and i' afraid every places are going to be too crowdy.

Beijing Can anyone help me with 2 websites written only in Chinese?
Posted: Sun August 23, 2009 07:39 PM UTC
I tried with Google translation but it won't translate anything. What I want to know is the price for a day ticket, opening times and address - I pretty much wanna know if they'll be open the last week of October.

The places are:

If anyone has any opinions/relevant info about the amusement park, I'm all ears.

Beijing Transit Visas for China
Posted: Thu August 20, 2009 09:01 PM UTC
I'm not able to get any information on "transit Visas" from the Chinese consulate's website in Toronto - maybe someone of you know the answer to this :

How long is a transit visa good for (how many hours) ? I will be in Beijing less than a day, and am wondering if a transit visa is good enough for that.

And if anyone knows how much a transit visa costs at the Chinese consulate in Toronto, that would be great ! Thanks.

Beijing International Transfers at Beijing Airport
Posted: Thu August 20, 2009 08:59 PM UTC
I'm wondering if anyone has had this particular situation with Beijing airport.

In October, I'll be flying from Mongolia to Beijing on Air China, then 4 hours later, flying from Beijing to Bangkok on Thai Airways. The problem is that these are 2 separate tickets, so I am told they will not check my bag all the way through.

My question is : will I be able to get my bag sent to the transfer area, so I can pick it up there, and not have to go out through customs to pick it up ? If I have to go through customs, I will need a visa, and I am trying to avoid that.

Beijing Beijing in late March
Posted: Sat August 15, 2009 06:07 PM UTC
We have the opportunity to visit Beijing for a few days beginning March 23rd of 2010. We wonder what kind of air quality we could expect at that time? I am a photographer and would be very interested in shooting during relatively clear conditions. Additionally, we do not mind chilly weather but, don't want to experience extremely frigid conditions.

Since we will also travel to parts of Southern China after our visit to Beijing, we would like to be relatively cool there also.

Looking at buying gifts for family and outselves from clothes eg T/Shirts Surf Brands, Leather Handbag, watches, sports shoes, camera lense age very from 3 yr old to our mums whom are in the 60's (Australian). If we fly into Beijing we will leave from Shanghai or vise versa. Also does China have Factory Outlets Complexs. The kind we have in Australia and also America. They are centres which have discounted brand store Eg When we where in America we went to an outlet complex which had a Guess Store which was 50% to 70% of the retail price on Guess goods, A Nike Store an Oakley Store and so on. Not looking for the big name upmarket designer label. Hope someone can help. Kind Regards

Beijing 2 weeks in Beijing or...?
Posted: Thu July 16, 2009 11:30 PM UTC
The plane tickets (return) to Beijing are bought, so now we just need to figure out what to do when there. So far we've bought lonely planet, frommers etc. but it seems quite overwhelming. Does anyone have a suggestion? We where thinking 1 week i Beijing, and then...? We are not very keen on flying around when there, it takes up too much stress time in airports, so if anyone can suggest a good place (trainride distance) to spend another week, before flying out of Beijing again, I would be most grateful. Perhaps somewhere on the coast?

Beijing Beijing & Xi'an Tour in September
Posted: Sun July 12, 2009 12:45 PM UTC
Will be in Beijing in the mid of September with my family of 4. In between, we like to travel to Xi'an from Beijing for 1.5 day. I like to know whether I can get the 'soft bed' train ticket from Beijing to Xi'an and back from the train station 2 or 3 days before the departure in the mid of September since it is expensive to book the train ticket thro' agent online. The second question is whether I can easily book a taxi (for whole day) to go to Mutianyu Great Wall, LAMA Temple, Summer Palace and Ming Tombs in 2 days. I'm able to speak chinese so I don't think I need a tour guide.

Beijing 5 days in Beijing
Posted: Wed June 17, 2009 05:47 PM UTC
I have a chance to fly to Beijing next week. Until I fly, I will be working long hours in the office so I may not have time to surf and compare tips. VT members help - I've never been to China before, let alone Beijing. Please recommend anything that you would do in five days while there. Info on transportation from airport to the city centre would be very helpful too. I would not like to miss a visit to a Chinese Theatre and would very much like to see the Great Wall of China. Thank you!

Beijing Sightseeing choices
Posted: Tue June 16, 2009 07:32 PM UTC
On my last trip to Beijing, I visited the Great Wall, Temple of Heaven, Forbidden City, Silk Market, Summer Palace, Peking University. This time, we will visit Forbidden city (again), the Great Wall (again), the hutongs, and another market. I have time left for one or two extra spots in Bejing to visit and need some suggestions. Here's a little hint: I am interested in taking photos of old architecture, not so well-visited by throngs of tourists. I like long empty corridors or interesting statues etc, sense of serenity. I won't be doing the Ming Tombs or the Old Summer Palace ruins, or any gardens or zoos. Something like the White Cloud Temple or Lama Temple would be ideal (although I'd like something truly unique to explore in terms of ancient architecture). Has anyone found a spot in Beijing where it feels like you are transported back in time?

Beijing shopping
Posted: Mon June 15, 2009 06:28 PM UTC
Hi Everyone,

I have two questions.

Where is a reputable place to buy jade (rings and pendants) in Beijing?

A friend wants a Mao suit. I don't think that any are to found nowadays in China but I told him that I'll give it a try. Does anyone know if there are still places in Beijing that still sell Mao suit?

Beijing Twenty-four hours in Beijing
Posted: Tue June 9, 2009 02:17 AM UTC
I'll be traveling through Beijing on my way from Frankfurt to Guam. I arrive around noon one day and will leave at 1:45pm the next day. Is there anything meaningful that can be seen in Beijing in that short of time? Tiananmen square, the Forbidden City, the zoo, and the Great Wall all come to mind. I've never been there so I don't know the logistics of getting from the airport, to a hotel, find a transportation source, overnight, check out, and get back to the airport in time to make the flight. Any experiences and advise would be helpful.
Thanks.
