Dalian What is life like in Dalian
Posted: Sun September 20, 2009 05:29 PM UTC
Hi everyone, Ni hoa!
I am going to Dalian in January for approx 1 year. I have many questions, but will stick to the basics, any help is appreciated. I need to know the general day to day stuff at the very least. For example!
1. How much is rent per month of a place in Dalian city of say 4 star?
2. What would it cost for cleaning service? or is this usually included?
3. How much would it be to get a taxi everyday for a journey of 20 minutes?
4. How much would it cost to survive one day i.e perhaps eating lunch and evening meal, not in a top restaurant... just average.
5. Is it a safe place to walk around by yourself .
6. Is there places where you can meet expats or even Chinese ppl as I have no idea what the culture will be like.
7. Importantly how much is it for leisure like a gym for a year?
8. Last but not least...what is the price of a pint of beer in a pub, average?

Thank you in advance!

Dalian Travelling to China for the first time 7 days in Dalian
Posted: Sun May 17, 2009 09:18 PM UTC
Hello,
I will be traveling with a friend to Dalian, China in the beginning of July. We will be staying at the Technical University's hotel there. My friend will be attending a conference for the majority of the daytime hours that we will be there. I would like to know some of your suggestions for fun places, historic sights, that you would suggest for a first time traveler to Dalian. I would appreciate day time suggestions for me, and things that both of us could do at night.(Please rate your suggestions) As well we will be spending 2 days in Bejing, any suggestions on making the most of those days. I do not speak mandarin, but I am a very outgoing adventurer and love trying new things.

I wonder which one is recommended by the people who lives there of have been there. If by guts feeling, Xianghai Golf Hotel looks fine.

Dalian who had bad experience at the university of foreign languages
Posted: Sun September 10, 2006 06:26 PM UTC
I would like to share my experience with those who have studied chinese in Dalian before.
I know there are many possiblities to learn chinese in Dalian, but i would like to know if i am the only person who have had really bad experiences with the attitude of the employees at Chinese Departement of the Dalian university of foreign languages.
I am extremely disappointed about the way they treated some students. I am not sure if it is a general attitude of dalian people or if the number of responsibles at the chinese department were less than needed, but i never felt compfortable when i asked them questions. For a foreign student it is a new world, but when i needed help, they sent me away or answered them totally impatient and unfriendly.
I have heard from a friend who contacted this university before, that they were incompetent and he complained about this university. I did not believe him until i made my own experience.
The teaching is acutally not that bad, but if the whole department is unpleasant, studying there will be unpleasant, too.
I would just like to let some of you know that you should better choose another institute to study chinese.

Dalian Bus/Train to Dalian via Zhuhai, Zhongshan or Guangzhou
Posted: Wed September 6, 2006 03:55 AM UTC
Hi, I would appreciate it very much if any of the VTers can help me with the following :-
1) Is there a bus i can take from either Zhuhai, Zhongshan or Guangzhou to Dalian ?
2) If so, what's the timing and how long is the journey.
3) Any indicative fares so that i can work on my budget.

Time is not a constraint, money is.. so i would prefer to travel either by the bus or the train unless there's no alternative but to fly. Thanking you in advance.

Dalian Finding a local student guide
Posted: Tue June 13, 2006 08:27 PM UTC
I will be visiting DaLian later in late August for 10 days, and have been recommended by a business associate to do what he did in Beijing, which was to employ a guide full time during his stay. That way you can see more and avoid the worry of getting lost or stranded without being able to read any signs. By UK standards it cost next to nothing apparently, (and the modest tip she got at the end was worth several months salary)
However I have read elsewhere that if you are not careful you can end up with a guide who is in league with restaurants and souvenir shops, and takes backhanders while you get ripped off. So, any advice please about the best way to find an honest student guide?
Thanks very much.

Dalian Nightlife in Dalian
Posted: Tue May 30, 2006 12:18 PM UTC
At present i am in Zhaoqing, China and thinking of moving to Dalian as a matter of a change. Is there any pure rock bars in Dalian that play live bands, i am not talking about places where they only play commerical stuff like Queen = We will rock you, Bon Jovi = It's my life, stuff. But a place that goes a little bit harder like Metallica's music wise or a jukebox that has got a wide selection.

Would appreciate if anyone can get back to me ^_^

Has anyone ever rode a ferry from Dalian to Yantai? How can you buy the ticket, how long is the journey, how much does it cost, and overall is it better to fly directly to qingdao instead of making a transit point in Yantai?

Dalian a week in Liaoning
Posted: Thu August 18, 2005 08:17 AM UTC
Hi, all-

I'm planning to take the ferry from Seoul to Dalian in a week's time, and stay in the area about a week, traveling around the area, before I go back to Korea to travel around there. I have spent some time in different parts of China and one of my main motivations for coming to this area is to see the North Korea-China border at Dandong, so I'm definitely planning to do that. What else is a must-see in the area? Also, if anyone else (currently in the area or planning to go) wants to travel with me, let me know!

Thanks!

Hello freinds - Please Help.

I am a single father moving into Dalian with a four year old Daughter. I very badly needed some information and hence am trying to solicit information here..

Few questions on Dalian
- Do I have lot of options for English speaking day care centre and how much do they cost,

what is their timing ? (I am non native speaker but for her age, my daughter speaks better

english than a native child)
- How expensive would be English speaking (or not) governess for my daughter who can stay with us (or work from 8 in the morning till 8 in the night with weekend off)
- What is the range of price for a Motor Bike or a entry level car
- How is the range of price for the rental for a 2 bed room appartment (modest/good)
- Any special precautions warnings that would be applicable to my special situation

Any responses would be warmely appreciated.

Dalian Visiting Dalian
Posted: Tue June 8, 2004 12:46 PM UTC
Hello there. I will be visiting Dalian for work during Oct-Nov.
Can anyone give me any ideas what to expect? Is it a nice place? Things to see, do, eat? How's the weather? Is it possible to take a boat to Tianjin?

I may be looking for a month's accom. for my wife and 2 kids. (I'm teaching at a Uni, but they apparently only have single accom.) Any ideas?

Thanks

Dalian what constitutes a decent wage
Posted: Wed May 12, 2004 05:49 PM UTC
Hi Folks

My wife and I are planning to move to Dalian from London in August. We are in the process of organising work and I'm wondering just what is a decent wage and what will have us scrimping. We are both teachers and will be teaching English, the plan is for a year. We have been offerd between 3 and 4,000 yuan but other institutions in other parts of China have offered between 7 and 10,000 which sounds much better but I really fancy the sound of Daliian.
I hope someone can help because I am anticipating a call from our contact in the next day or so and I suspect he'll want to talk about money, I don't want to ask for too much but at the same time I don't want to sell ourselves short.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this

regards
