| Kunming | Travel to Yuanyang Rice Terraces Posted: Sun April 23, 2006 10:14 PM UTC
I only have 1 1/2 days to visit the Yunnan Province. I was thinking to fly into Kunming and then visit the Southern Yuanyang rice terraces. Does anyone have a tour guide recommendation that can drive me and my companion to Yuanyang, visit the rice terraces, and drive us back to Kunming? How long of a drive (hours and distance) is it from Kunming to the rice terraces? Am I trying to do too much in too short of a time period?

| Kunming | Flat or set of rooms for a week July 2006 Posted: Fri March 10, 2006 09:37 PM UTC
Hi I will be visiting Kunming for a week or so at the end of July with my husband and three children. We have friends and family there and used to live there many years ago. We are looking for maybe a flat or suite of rooms to rent as we would like to not just have two separate bedrooms in a hotel. Ideally a sitting room with two bedrooms but it doesn't have to be very smart! Ideally in Cuihu area, Yunnan University etc. Can't get through to Yunda by phone. Does anyone have any suggestions with tel/fax or email addresses? We would be really grateful.

| Kunming | Yunnan Normal University Posted: Tue February 28, 2006 02:09 AM UTC
ni hao ma? I am thinking about going to Yunnan Normal University for the summer to learn mandarin. I am not sure the university is good for students that have little exprience with mandarin, aka, me. I am planning to go when the classes had already begun in Yunnan. I am worried that I might not be able to catch up with the classes missed.
Also, are their accommodations and learning environment suitable for international students? This is the first time I am travelling to Yunnan is there anything useful I need to know before i embark on this journey. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.(xie xie ni) |

| Kunming | Advise needed for trip from Kunming to Dali Posted: Thu February 16, 2006 12:51 PM UTC
February 16, 2006
We are planning a trip to Kunming shortly and are interested to travel from Kunming to Dali. We were told by our travel agent that we can either travel by tour bus or fly from Kunming to Dali. We understand that travel by bus will take somewhere 5-6 hours due to road condition and occassional traffic jams. Flying will also take about 3 hours considering in and out of airports. Can anyone give me some advise as to which route is best to take. Considering driving safty and road condition. Your advise is appreciated. |

| Kunming | Flights Kunming - Bangkok or Chiang Mai Posted: Mon February 6, 2006 11:13 AM UTC
My son is having a week of exams at the end of February and immediatlely afterwards he leaves for a trip to Asia, starting in Beijing.Since he is really studying hard right now, he asked me to so some final research about his trip. From Beijing he's going to Tianjin, then to Kunming. He had planned to go to Xiamen afterwards and fly to Bangkok from there.
Now he learned that there are flights from Kunming to Bangkok, much easier for him. Thai Airways is the only airline I found which can be booked from outside China. But they have only business class left for the weekend of March 10 - 12. I also checked their flights to Chiang Mai that weekend, the same, only business class. Is there something special going on this weekend , like the end of a conference, so that all economy seats are taken? Or is the Thai Airways website not working properly? Does anyone know of any other airline flying Kunming to Chiang Mai or Bangkok? I'd appreciate any help.Thank you. |

| Kunming | Biking Tour Posted: Thu January 26, 2006 05:20 AM UTC
I am starting out this Sunday 29 January on a 7 day bike ride. I will begin in Kunming and bike east toward Nanning, in Guangxi. Has anyone done a ride through these parts before? My goal is to reach Baise in Guangxi (and take a bus from Baise to Nanning to catch my return flight to Shanghai, where I live).
Any advice on roads or towns along the way worth visiting would be useful. Please note that I will not vary my general eastward direction to reach a different destination, so please kindly do not recommend that I bike to Shangrila or Xishuangbana, etc. ALSO - does anyone know of any good online maps that would cover in detail this route? I have not yet purchased a Yunnan or Guangxi map (someone hard to locate in Shanghai). My friend, who will be joining me in Kunming, already has a map, but I'd like to take a preview beforehand if possible. Thanks, Chris |

And another question - if I am in Dali - how many days I should stay there taking under consideration that I do not have much time. And the same about Lijang. In this case I have heard it is minimum 2 days. Thank you in advance for help! Kasia |

| Kunming | What to do with an iPod? Posted: Fri November 18, 2005 06:35 AM UTC
Hello VT Kunming friends,
My dilemma: I am a completely technology and gadget-averse person living in Guangzhou, but leaving for several months of travel through SE Asia in December, via Kunming. I was given (actually I ended up purchasing...long story...) a new Apple iPod MP3 player for my trip, but like I said, I completely don't like carrying these types of things ever, much less when I travel. It is a brilliant piece of equipment, brand new, never used, still in the box, holds photos, and I even have the receipt. I'll be travelling a lot on a budget, so I feel that this is too much the luxury. Is anybody else interested in taking it off my hands? I know it's a great thing to have when one travels, but I don't even own a mobile phone, so I certainly don't like carrying around something like that around. Any of you want some music to keep you company on your travels? Cheers, Rachel |

| Kunming | Attention Kunming locals - a huge favor to ask... Posted: Mon September 19, 2005 06:31 AM UTC
In August this year we travelled to Kunming to adopt a child. His name is Wu Zhong and he is a wonderful child. We fell in love with Kunming when we were there and hope to return regularly in the future.
Whilst we were there, our guide took us to where they believed Wu Zhong was found but it did not fit the description we had from the orphanage. Wu Zhong was found outside the Xiao Xiao Laundry opposite the Defan School in Kunming City. I was wondering if any locals would be able to find this location and take several photos and email them to me at snelvis@tpg.com.au I know this is a big ask from someone you do not know but if you do this for me I will be happy to send a gift from Australia to you. Thanks in advance, Mark Rodger-Snelson |

| Kunming | Interested Expat Posted: Fri September 16, 2005 05:54 PM UTC
Dear Forum,
I am currently comparing expat assignments. One option being Kunming. I have read through the different posting and still have a few questions: Medical Questions - 1. What is the best hospital in Kunming? 2. Is there Malaria in Kunming City? 3. Are ther other local sicknesses or diseases that foreigners need to be concerned about? Living Conditions - 4. Do most expats live in large condo/apartments? 5. Are there houses for rent with yards for children? Family Issues - 6. Are the activities for children, i.e. gymnastics, swimming, sports' camps, etc.? 7. I read there is one International School. Do the children also learn Chinese? English is good, but I hope they learn Chinese as well. Travel 8. Is it easy to travel to and from Kunming? 9. Cost and time? 10. What about to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai? Thanks for all the help. | Kunming | Traditional hotels? Posted: Fri August 19, 2005 08:52 PM UTC
I am looking for a traditional type hotel or smaller boutique place for a trip to Kunming in October. The only types of places I've been able to find online and in books are large, western style, 4 star hotels. I've been able to get what I'm looking for, although also difficult to find, in Shanghai and Lijiang but the other cities I'm visiting, including Kunming have only the same types of places I could find here in the U.S. (Holiday Inn, etc.) which I'm not interested in at all. I'm really not too concerned with cost, I'm just looking for something small, nice and Chinese. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I will look at othe posts with regards to doing things in and around the area, but would love other suggestions as well. Thanks.
