| Lhasa | View of Everest (Chomolungma) Posted: Sun July 2, 2006 12:40 AM UTC
Looking to get a decent photo of Everest on the way from Lhasa to Khatmandu. Is it necessary to get a tour that turns off the road and heads south toward base camp or can you see it ok from the road? Is it customary for a driver to stop for a picture or am I going to be photographing at 90 miles per hour?
Thanks. |

| Lhasa | Beijing to Lhasa, anybody have the scoop. Posted: Thu June 29, 2006 06:08 PM UTC
I've been waiting patiently reading the papers and know the tickets for the 1st an 2nd have been sold.
How easy or difficult was it to get tickets and did you have to get a permit or did they do away with that. I'm heading to Chengdu or Beijing tomorrow, whichever train leaves first. Anything you can add that would make it easier? |

| Lhasa | Lhasa - Kathmandu in January Posted: Mon June 12, 2006 02:45 AM UTC
Hi
I am planing to travel from Shanghai to Lhasa in January and, if possible, continue to Kathmandu. Does anybody have any information if the bus service is running at this time of year, if passes are usually open, or what other possible routes and modes of travel exist? Thank you for your help, Niklas |

I'm looking to cross China through Tibet. Is it easier permit/visa wise Khatmandu-Lhasa-Chengdu-Shanghai or Shanghai-Chengdu-Lhasa-Khatmandu? Can I just waltz through the country on my own or do I have to be part of a tour group?
Thanks in advance... |

| Lhasa | What can I expect? Posted: Fri March 10, 2006 08:54 PM UTC
Hi, I am going on a 8 day trekking tour starting in Lhasa in the middle of May. My question is what sort of things can I expect. i.E. When we are trecking do the tours usually provide people or vehicles to carry equipment/ supplies? Do you normally set up a camp each night with tents etc. How strenuous are the treks? I'm 54 yo not in great shape but go to the gym 4 days a week. On the treks do you typically meet Tibetan people. Or is it primarily sight seeing? I have my itinery below. Thank you for any help.

Tibet’s strategic importance, straddling the Himalaya between China and the Indian svbcontinent, made it irresistible to China who invaded in 1950. But Tibetans have never had it easy. Theirs is a harsh environment and human habitation has always been a precarious proposition Even so, the deliberate cultural strangling inflicted by the Chinese occupiers since 1950 rates as the worst misfortune the inhabitants of the ‘Land of Snows’ have been forced to encAire. We are hoping to travel to Lhasa and around Tibet in October, perhaps even to Base Camp but we are a little concerned with the high probability of AMS or altitude sickness. Have read all the signs and symptoms but woud like any feedback from anyone including how many become really sick and how good are the facilities there. The trip back to Kathmandu will be by road andI know the passes are very high so is it a good trip back ? Thanks.

| Lhasa | Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland in October Posted: Sat September 24, 2005 04:29 PM UTC
Hey I'm going to Lhasa at the end of October, and was hoping to do an overland tour to Kathmandu, with a stop at Everest BC if possible. Just wondering if somebody has done this trip before and how much it cost them? Also, is it likely that I would be able to find other travellers to share the cost of the 4x4 (being that it is the tail end of tourist season)?
If anyone is interested in this tour, I'd be planning to leave Lhasa around the 22nd of October. Give me a shout if you'll be in Lhasa around that time. Any advice/suggestions/warnings people could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul paulcohoon(at)hotmail(dot)com |

| Lhasa | Travel permit and trip to KTM Posted: Sun June 5, 2005 04:27 PM UTC
Hi all,
I'm travelling to Tibet later this year and was wondering how long it will take to get the Travel Permit for Tibet in Chengdu? Is it a matter of a couple of hours or does it take longer? And, I'll be arriving on a friday in Chengdu, does anyone know if you can start 'the permit process' on that day? ie it's not a day when offices are closed et cetera One other question, I want to travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu by jeep along the friendship road. How does this work? Do you sign up for such a trip at a travel agency in Lhasa? If so can you recommend one? If you are with two persons is that enough to take the trip from Lhasa to KTM? Thanks a lot and regards, Jaap |

| Lhasa | Lhasa - how do all the limitations look? Posted: Mon May 9, 2005 10:41 AM UTC
Hi,
I am going to Lhasa, and read a lot about the limitations ("foreigners not allowed to roam freely"). What does it look like? I arrived in Lhasa, come to my hotel, and am going to some palace next day (or go shopping at night, lets say). Will a policemen meet me in front of the hotel, and say - "No, you are allowed to leave the hotel, only with the group"? How does it work? And: August is a rainy season. Is it a good reason to delay travel, or it is no really rainy there? Leo |

| Lhasa | travel to Tibet and Mt.Kailash Posted: Thu December 30, 2004 09:18 PM UTC
Please reply and suggest your views for following:
1)Understand that if i were to visit Tibet from Kathamandu, Nepal , i have to join a group to onbtain special permit from a local travel agency. Incase i visit Tibet from Chengdu (China), do i have to join a group? It is said that in case i fly from any point in China to Tibet, i need to book a LandCruiser, a driver and a guide through a travel agency. Is it true? 2)Without going through a travel agency, is it possible in Lahsa to get a LandCruiser with a driver who will also act as guide for my further trip to Mt.Kailash? 3)Is the month of May suitable to visit Lahsa and Mt.Kailash, as actually i prefer Sept? 4) Any information on Mt.Kailash and Lahsa will be useful. Thank you in advance. |

| Lhasa | Should sleeping bag be the necessity? Posted: Mon November 22, 2004 02:15 AM UTC
I'm travelling by jeep from Lhasa to Katmandu in May on a basic tour. I don't want to take a sleeping bag. Tour company say it is optional but recommended for the monastry near Everest Base Camp. But that's only one night. So two questions:
1) Has anyone done a trip like this without a sleeping bag and lived to tell the tale? 2) Would a space blanket be an acceptable alternative to a sleeping bag? All or any advice gratefully accepted. Good travelling everyone. Thanks all. |

| Lhasa | finding travel agent/group Posted: Tue August 17, 2004 02:44 PM UTC
Hello!
My sister and I are traveling to Kathmandu 2 November, and would like to go to Lhasa (one of these 8 day or so overland tours yada yada). I've found some budgeted tours online, but... Is it better to wait until we get to Nepal to find a tour? Will we find cheaper options or is it better to get a jump on it from here? We're living in Korea right now, and travel agent information is really limited! What can we expect to find re: info for tours in Nepal (probably Thamel area is our best bet?) Thanks a lot for the help! KTS and RES |
