| Shanghai | clothing bargains Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 06:26 AM UTC
Hi.
I will be spending an afternoon and a night in the French Concession in May. Last year while in Guangzhou I was able to purchase a designer label leather jacket very cheaply in a kind of upstairs backroom "shop" where I was directed by a scout on one of the main shopping streets. This was presumably fake, but of good quality. Unfortunately, it was stolen from my suitcase while in Latin America last week. Is there anywhere in Shanghai, not more than 10 minutes by taxi from the French Concession, where I could buy a replacement? Doesn't have to be a designer label, I'd just like to get a new smart leather jacket at a very cheap price. Another question. Where should I go to stock up on green tea to take home? Thanks, tkdsimes |

| Shanghai | Transport from airport to hotel and vice versa Posted: Mon March 31, 2008 12:00 PM UTC
Hi, We are a group of 6 ladies travelling to Shanghai end of Apr 08. I would like to know what's the best way to get from the airport to our hotel, Topsun on the Bund, on Huimin Road. Should we find a van large enough for us and our luggage to take us to our hotel or should we take the Maglev train to downtown station and then grab maybe 3 taxis for 3 of us to the hotel? What about departing for the airport from hotel?

Hi. We made a reservation at the Celebrity Service Apartments (1077 XieTu Rd) and would like information on getting from Pudong airport to there. I see that airport bus Line No. 3 stops at Da Pu Qiao, does anyone know if that stop is near enough to walk to the hotel from there? Thanks for your help.

Anybody who knows where I can have hotel information of the Shang Fu Holiday Hotel in Shanghai China? I've seen one webpage that Shang Fu Holiday Hotel was written but unfortunately, the rest of the web page was in chinese characters. Asiarooms has this hotel in their webpage however, they no longer accept booking from such hotel.
Your input on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mayt |

| Shanghai | clarification on my budget trip posting Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 11:21 PM UTC
I mean when I said in my earlier posting good hotel, I mean reasonable enough already. Has toiletries, slippers, bathtub, aircon, free internet access, clean. Also, the rate that I made in my earlier posting is based on 2-3 persons occupancy per room.

| Shanghai | Budget trip Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 10:47 PM UTC
We are a group of 12 who plans to visit Shanghai and Beijing for a period of one week. (3 days Shanghai, 3 days Beijing, plus 1 day allotted for train travel from Shanghai to Beijing). We are on a budget since only 2 people will shoulder for the expenses and our group have 8 children ages 5 to 15 but these kids have already experienced staying in hostels or backpakers place in different countries that also include the 5 year old kid. We are looking for a clean hotel, hostel or backpackers place. Airconditioned room and elevated toilet is a must (not those kind of toilet that is flat on the floor since the children are not used to this kind and they refuse to use it). Our budget is about US$40/room that is near bargain shopping markets, near to MRT and attraction places, in short, City center. We have experienced travelling to China but not Shanghai and Beijing and the US$40/rm per night in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhuhai, Zhongshan,Xiamen, are already good hotels.
Thanks, May |

| Shanghai | hotels in shanghai Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 06:14 AM UTC
Dear Friends,
I will be in Shanghai from Apr. 7 to Apr. 11 for a conference, the conference will be held in Hilton shanghai hotel. I am wondering if you could suggest any hotels near the hilton hotel. I am looking for a hotel not more than 80 us$/night. Also, do you think that it is better to reserve a room in advance or it is possible to go directly to a hotel at my arrival from Dubai. (15:30 p.m.) The other question is: Where are the attractions and sight seeing there that I must visit. Regards, Mohamed |

| Shanghai | Family moving to Shanghai Posted: Mon March 24, 2008 02:20 AM UTC
I am most likely moving to shanghai at the end of this year. I am a sole parent and taking my 2 children aged 12 & 10. I have visited shanghai numerous times on business, and whilst I have had fun (and learned the tricks the hard way) when shopping in markets or on the streets, I'm a little confused when shopping in the malls. I have two questions
1. Do the bargaining rules apply when shopping in malls - or is it like in Aus, you pay the advertised price ? 2. Are there nice swimming places (beaches) to visit ? |

Was thinking of waiting 5 hours in the airport before going into the city. What are the facilities available at Pudong Airport? Thanks.

| Shanghai | Shanghai-Beijing flying/airfare Posted: Sat March 1, 2008 02:20 AM UTC
Hello everyone,
I've read online that it's quite easy to purchase domestic tickets within China, and that the closer you get to the specific date the cheaper the airfare is. I'll be in Shanghai in June for a couple of days (3-5) and will need to travel to Beijing on a specific day. I was just wondering -- if I wait until arriving in China to try to purchase tickets, do I run any risk of not having a flight? I need to fly to Beijing on 6/13, and I just don't want to run in the situation of not being able to secure a flight. (I am traveling in mid-June, so this will not be during the New Year or any other major Chinese holidays.) |

| Shanghai | Shanghai to Xi'an airfare Posted: Sat February 23, 2008 07:02 PM UTC
Hello. We will be travelling to China in June. We would like to fly from Shanghai to Xi’an, but all of the airfares we have found the last few months (using ctrip.com, elong.net, airChina.com.cn, Hnair.com) are either full price, or at most 30% off. (Well, Ctrip shows a bunch or great fares, but when you go to book them, it always says “fail to check seats”...anyone know what’s up with that?)
Anyway, I was wondering if airfare in China often comes on sale closer to the date of travel. In other words, do we have any hope of snagging a cheaper slight? If we can’t and thus need to take the train, how difficult would it be to get last minute train tickets (for a sleeper car) for this route in Shanghai? (We only arrive Shanghai 2 days before we would leave to Xi’an). Thanks in advance for any information. |

| Shanghai | OUTLET in Shanghai Posted: Sat February 23, 2008 11:35 AM UTC
I heard that there is an outlet building called OUTLET in Shanghai. I saw someone posted in one of the forum that she was able to buy a pair of original Nine West sandals for 50rmb only. she was sure that that place is selling all original stuff.
Is it true? Is there really an outlet building in shanghai called OUTLET that sells stuff as low as 50rmb? Because she said it was all original, only the style is a bit outdated. |

| Shanghai | Side trip from Shanghai Posted: Sun February 10, 2008 09:19 PM UTC
We plan to be in Shanghai this April. One possibility that we are exploring is to do a side trip to either Suzhou or Hangzhou while we are there. Which would you recommend? Would you do it as a day trip or as an overnight? We will be with our 7-year old daughter and 77-year old aunt. Both are experienced travelers, but, given their ages, we want to keep the logistics reasonably simple.

| Shanghai | Shanghai city to the neighboring Canal Towns by boat is possible ?? Posted: Thu February 7, 2008 06:33 PM UTC
I would like to find out whether it is possible to take boat trips from Shanghai to the Canal towns like SuZhou, TongLi, ZhouZhang,....etc.
If not, would it be possible to take public transport (bus and train) to make as many connections to all the important Canal towns (4-5 towns) in 1-2 days using Shanghai as a base. Where is a good site to see the connection times for buses and trains to these towns. English or Chinese is OK. I would like to capture the views of these ancient history before they vanish with modernization. Thanks, |
