| Shanghai | Route Planner China/Shanghai Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 11:52 AM UTC
Hi all!
We are planning a trip to China. Is there an online route planner for China/Shanghai? It's like the ones for Europe, where you put in Start point (address/postcode/place of interest etc) and Destination of where you want to go, and it gives you step by step driving directions, total travelling time, distance in km etc? Thank you gc_lon |

| Shanghai | Nearest hotel to the airport? Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 07:21 AM UTC
What is the nearest hotel to the airport? This person in another forum will be arriving in Shanghai at 1AM. He would want to ride the Maglev train to Longyang road. However given the early arrival time of his flight he has 9-10 hours to burn. So instead of waiting at the airport he is thinking of getting a hotel near PVG before using the MagLev.

| Shanghai | I am In a Dilemma Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 01:23 AM UTC
I need opinions..!!! I have signed up for a trip to Beijing/Inner Mongolia/Shanghai 2 months back. I will be going with my husband and 2 kids aged 8 and 11.
The thing is I keep reading of the deadly EV71 virus that are going around in China and I am so worried now. I have already paid a deposit of $2000 to the tour agency abd have to pay the rest in 10 days time. Do you think I should continue with the trip or should I cancel? I will only be in Beijing for 1 day, then off to Inner Mongolia for 4 days then 2 nights in Shanghai. What's the situation in China now? I will be calling the travel agency later to see what my options are... Faridah : ) |

| Shanghai | Winter in Shanghai Posted: Mon April 14, 2008 03:19 PM UTC
Hi,
My family and I are planning a short China trip of 11 days (not including travel days to/from New York City) this December/January. We are considering skipping Beijing and heading straight for Shanghai and the region. My preference is to enjoy the food and feel of the city calmly (if that's possible in Shanghai) and then look for other scenic/historic destinations south and central. We are willing to miss some of the big attractions to gain a feeling for the country. I am just beginning my learning curve starting to plan a winter trip, but my over-riding question is: are there any of the more common tourist destinations that are particularly uninteresting in the winter? Also, are there any areas around Shanghai that might be more interesting to visit in the end of December? As is obvious, we are just in the beginning stage, I appreciate any thoughts on off-peak adventures. Gregg |

| Shanghai | What, where & how to do at Shanghai Posted: Wed April 9, 2008 12:37 PM UTC
I'm going for a business trip at Shanghai. I'll stay at Galaxy Hotel at Zhongshan Road form April 12 to 16. After that I will go to Kunming. I would find full day & night free only April 14 (Monday). Would you please suggest how I would pass that day for showing the beauty of Shanghai? I also want to enjoy nightlife of Shanghai. So how & where I could go & pass the time.
I would also find evening time (from 5pm), up to late night, free on April 15 (Tuesday)& 16(Wednesday). So also suggest me to make schedule on those days for evening time. And also advice me to shop cheaply (not aware for brand product)......leather jacket, casual blazer, shoe. One more thing........I'm also interested to buy an LCD TV (32") and bring it to Dhaka by China Eastern Airlines. Do you think the airlines & china customs will deny bringing it to Dhaka? Could I carry that TV in the cabin luggage or I have to book for that luggage? I guess, lots of questions & queries I have posted here. But you know visiting any new places would be mess if we couldn't plan for the efficiency. Thank you for your passion. |

| Shanghai | clothing bargains Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 06:26 AM UTC
Hi.
I will be spending an afternoon and a night in the French Concession in May. Last year while in Guangzhou I was able to purchase a designer label leather jacket very cheaply in a kind of upstairs backroom "shop" where I was directed by a scout on one of the main shopping streets. This was presumably fake, but of good quality. Unfortunately, it was stolen from my suitcase while in Latin America last week. Is there anywhere in Shanghai, not more than 10 minutes by taxi from the French Concession, where I could buy a replacement? Doesn't have to be a designer label, I'd just like to get a new smart leather jacket at a very cheap price. Another question. Where should I go to stock up on green tea to take home? Thanks, tkdsimes |

| Shanghai | Transport from airport to hotel and vice versa Posted: Mon March 31, 2008 12:00 PM UTC
Hi, We are a group of 6 ladies travelling to Shanghai end of Apr 08. I would like to know what's the best way to get from the airport to our hotel, Topsun on the Bund, on Huimin Road. Should we find a van large enough for us and our luggage to take us to our hotel or should we take the Maglev train to downtown station and then grab maybe 3 taxis for 3 of us to the hotel? What about departing for the airport from hotel?

| Shanghai | clarification on my budget trip posting Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 11:21 PM UTC
I mean when I said in my earlier posting good hotel, I mean reasonable enough already. Has toiletries, slippers, bathtub, aircon, free internet access, clean. Also, the rate that I made in my earlier posting is based on 2-3 persons occupancy per room.

| Shanghai | Budget trip Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 10:47 PM UTC
We are a group of 12 who plans to visit Shanghai and Beijing for a period of one week. (3 days Shanghai, 3 days Beijing, plus 1 day allotted for train travel from Shanghai to Beijing). We are on a budget since only 2 people will shoulder for the expenses and our group have 8 children ages 5 to 15 but these kids have already experienced staying in hostels or backpakers place in different countries that also include the 5 year old kid. We are looking for a clean hotel, hostel or backpackers place. Airconditioned room and elevated toilet is a must (not those kind of toilet that is flat on the floor since the children are not used to this kind and they refuse to use it). Our budget is about US$40/room that is near bargain shopping markets, near to MRT and attraction places, in short, City center. We have experienced travelling to China but not Shanghai and Beijing and the US$40/rm per night in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhuhai, Zhongshan,Xiamen, are already good hotels.
Thanks, May |

| Shanghai | hotels in shanghai Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 06:14 AM UTC
Dear Friends,
I will be in Shanghai from Apr. 7 to Apr. 11 for a conference, the conference will be held in Hilton shanghai hotel. I am wondering if you could suggest any hotels near the hilton hotel. I am looking for a hotel not more than 80 us$/night. Also, do you think that it is better to reserve a room in advance or it is possible to go directly to a hotel at my arrival from Dubai. (15:30 p.m.) The other question is: Where are the attractions and sight seeing there that I must visit. Regards, Mohamed |

| Shanghai | Family moving to Shanghai Posted: Mon March 24, 2008 02:20 AM UTC
I am most likely moving to shanghai at the end of this year. I am a sole parent and taking my 2 children aged 12 & 10. I have visited shanghai numerous times on business, and whilst I have had fun (and learned the tricks the hard way) when shopping in markets or on the streets, I'm a little confused when shopping in the malls. I have two questions
1. Do the bargaining rules apply when shopping in malls - or is it like in Aus, you pay the advertised price ? 2. Are there nice swimming places (beaches) to visit ? |
