Mad Men on AMC fans??
Posted: Tue October 7, 2008 12:40 PM UTC
I LOVE this show! Any other fans? It is set in an Ad Agency on
Madison Avenue in the early 60s ~ it is so fun to see the clothes
( It was the Camelot era!) and all the little details. Remember how
nonchalantly we used to throw garbage out the car window?! Or
how much better "manners" were? How taboo divorce was? Everyone drank
scotch rocks and smoked like a chimney :)

Great show!

True Blood
Posted: Tue October 7, 2008 12:28 PM UTC
I have become addicted to the new HBO show True Blood. It is a great vampire show and very well written. I was happy to see that the same people who wrote HBO's Six Feet Under were involved in this show. The cast is great, espcially Anna Pacquin. I have followed her since she won the Oscar for the movie The Piano when she was a little girl. I can't wait for Sunday's nights at 9pm when the show airs. Anyone else seen it?

Some days ago I was a bit down and I deleted all my pics in my hompeage and wrote "closed" on it. Several VTers has written to me to know the reason of this thing.

I only want to thank them and say I'm doing quite fine these days. I will "open" my page soon.

Your favorite place that isn't a VT destination?
Posted: Tue October 7, 2008 04:46 AM UTC
Where have you been in the world that isn't a VT destination that you've liked the most? Last summer my wife and I went to Beer, England and enjoyed a pleasant afternoon watching the fishermen and tourists alike at the pebbled beach, followed by a beer sitting outside a sunny pub. How about you?

What's in the hole???
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 09:49 PM UTC
I was in Lisbon last week and while we were walking up to the St. George Castle,
we came across a street that was sealed off to traffic as there was a
long line of tourists waiting to enter a manhole! There was no sign whatsoever
as to what's to see down there, so might anyone know what it could be?

Funerals can get giggles....
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 08:02 PM UTC
A cardiologist died and was given an elaborate funeral. A huge
heart covered in flowers stood behind the casket during the service.

Following the eulogy, the heart opened, and the casket rolled inside.

The heart then closed, sealing the doctor in the beautiful heart
forever.

At that point, one of the mourners burst into laughter. When all eyes
stared at him, he said, 'I'm sorry, I was just thinking of my own
funeral ......I'm a gynecologist.'

The proctologist fainted

Bed Bugs
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 07:45 PM UTC
When you wake from mid-sleep;
Floating between various layers of consciousness;
Pushing trough the spider-web bordering dreams and reality;
Do you prefer to find yourself alone in your huge comfortable bed?
Or would you rather share a minute piece of it and the sound of familiar breathing?

Are you a snuggler or a lounger?

Rocky Horror Picture Show
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 06:20 PM UTC
Have you seen it? Did you like it?

I plan to watch it in a theater with a live shadowcast.

Would it be wise to watch the movie first at home? that way we could follow the plot and maybe even participate - we'd buy the Prop Bags with water pistols, glow sticks etc.

One for the guys...
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 05:53 PM UTC
Although ladies, please tell me your stories.

Hubby is preparing dinner (bless his little cotton socks). There was an agonised yell from the kitchen *PLASTER!!!*. At first I thought he wanted me to urgently plaster the ceiling, but upon dropping everything and rushing to his aid, I found him clutching his finger in apparent agony. His faced was screwed up and, despite obvious lack of blood, I carefully removed the tea towel to inspect the injury, expecting a visit to the Casualty Department at the very least. A tiny miniscule cut on the forefinger. I mean TINY, about 1.5mm. His screams were due to the fact that the onion juice (akin to sulphuric acid) had invaded the dreaded wound.

Okay guys, now is the time to admit it. Do you suffer from delusions of immediate death from a tiny cut, or indeed Man Flu? Fess up!

World Population
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 05:19 PM UTC
The projected figure given for the population of the world as at July 1st 2009 is: 6,786,743,939 as compared to 6,706,992,932 as at July 1st 2008

Yes, I did the sum and in that period the population will have increased by 79,751,007.

This is despite being weighed with all the factors like AIDS, malaria, TB, cholera, dysentery, tropical diseases, starvation, heart attacks, pnuemonia, road accidents, murders, wars, natural disasters etc etc.

Do you really think that the Earth can support this increase? What would be your solution? Your considered thoughts please.

Could you explain what is the meaning of "over land" when somebody is travelling "over land".
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 05:14 PM UTC
This expression means that somebody is travelling without flights, isn't? My question is if you can do a travel around the world over land. I consider that sailing or travelling on the sea is also overland. It's correct?

Thank you

Do you have the impression your tips are being taken serious?
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 04:28 PM UTC
I don't.

I entered a tip about traffic jams at the Amsterdam Coentunnel yesterday(http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1d4f7f) and today the biggest traffic jam of all times was created by a truck that blocked all lanes of the tunnel and made the traffic on the Amsterdam Ring come to a complete standstill.

Yes, Read my tips (I said that before, haha).

what goes around...
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 01:43 PM UTC
I curse the grey squirrels which live around here. They dig lots of little holes in my lawn, to bury the peanuts which one of the neighbours puts out for them (or maybe its the birds). I curse the neighbours as well, but that's a tale for another time.

Of course sometimes the peanuts germinate and I get groundnuts appearing on my lawn.

A pair of crows spend half their time sitting on my roof. Noisy b*****s especially at dawn in spring time, so I curse them as well for waking me at 4am.

The crows have spotted what the squirrels do, and as soon as they've finished burying and turn their backs, the crows fly down and dig up the peanuts.

Gives me some morbid satisfaction. What goes around, comes around.

My dilemma - I'd like to scare away the crows so I can sleep late in the spring - say 6.30am. But, I want them to keep hoovering up the peanuts.

Any ideas out there?

Looking to buy a new mobile phone
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 08:58 AM UTC
Have been looking at Nokia (always relaible and very functionable) and came across their Xpress Music range. I really like the 5310 model but I see there is a 5320 model which looks virtually the same but more expensive. Any ideas as to what the difference is?

They are also coming out with a 5800 which is a touch screen..looks bigger and Im sure much more expensive, but again, what are the differences...I think half the time, the functions are all the same..

Any mobile phone geeks out there ready and just dying to answer this?

An awkward moment.
Posted: Mon October 6, 2008 07:32 AM UTC
I am spending my last week in Malta, bidding Good-bye to family and friends.

An 80 year old uncle, critically religious and a devout Roman Catholic, divulged that he considered Ethiopian and Sudanese refugees landing illegally on this island should be thrown back into the sea without mercy.

I questioned his reasoning and was told he firmly believed that the Bible depicted anyone Black as the Devil.

I explained that painters chose black as the reverse to the white culture they lived in and religion never said black was devilish!
Nor is anyone black anything other than a fellow human and not a superstitious entity.
He pushed the point and I suggested to ask his priest.
I suggested he might review his bible and look towards repressing his fear of the unknown.

I fear ignorance of life still exists in conservative societies without experience of reality.
Fear creates strange conflicts in the untraveled.

I have no qualms being unpopular with the ignorant!
Problem is there are so many!

Zanzibar Warning
Posted: Sun October 5, 2008 07:09 PM UTC
Hello, I am the wife of a fench man who was shoted during the night of 17 september 2008. Here after you will have the global story but what i can say is :
1st the story is real and my husband is always at hte hospital (please see Foreign Commonwealth office to see evidence that it is true)
fco.gov.uk/en/…tanzania
There are cases of armed crime in Dar es Salaam, including in the peninsula area and Coco beach, which is popular with expatriates. In Zanzibar there have been several reports of robberies, some accompanied with violence, occurring on popular tourist beaches. Most recently armed robbers shot a French tourist at a guesthouse on the East Coast of Zanzibar on 18 September 2008.,)

2nd i did not know before the cristal resort owners, and I can not judge them but thanks to their help my husband is alive.

Even if I do not want to speak about it too much today it is of my duty to warn all the travelers and the tourists. While we had chosen to make our honeymoon in Tanzania + Zanzibar, we were a victim of a holdup on September 17th, 2008 at 8 pm. This took place in the hotel crystal resort in Zanzibar (towards Paje village). The hotel as many of the others is situated on the beach with bungalow. Thus it is not closed. We were in the dining restaurant, a man appeared from the beach equipped with a very big rifle. He assaulted a lady who ate and try to steal her bag. Then certainly to show that his weapon was a real one he fires a bullet on the ground, and it is my husband who sat in front of me who received the bullet into its intestines. It entered by the back some centimetres of his column and went out on left of its body. It rose while howling and fell down by ground. The man continued to attack other tourists, fired once again but directed on the swimming pool this time without wounding anybody. Then that lasted a half hour, me lying close to my husband trying to speak to him and all the other tourists on the ground, without knowing if the men were still there. We were then attacked by a man with a knife. The police force although being prevented 5 min after the shooting, condescended to be shown only 40 minutes after. The owners of the hotel and me then evacuated my husband using a pick up because neither helicopter nor ambulances are available on this island. Then always thanks to the hotel which has a private partnership with an airline company of safety/repatriation, we could go in Dar Es salem. Even if Nairobi would have be the best, the internal bleeding did not allow a transport to Nairobi. Indeed it took the bullet at 8:15pm and could only be in the hospital at 12:15pm … He was operated during 4 hours, the bullete had divided into 2 the small intestine and damaged the large intestine. Fortunately the surgeon was very qualified and bent all. Fortunately the bullet had touched only the intestines what is almost a miracle. He had lost so many blood that he has being transfused with 3 pockets, and the hospital did not have enough blood. Fortunately I was compatible, fortunately Tanzanians helped me and one man gave its blood this night for my husband. The embassy was prevented very quickly but during the night helped me neither psychologically nor to find blood because according to the consul “but everyone sleeps Madam”. She did not move until 8:30am, hour of the beginning of daily work I imagine. Then the nightmare continued 7 days before we are repatriated in France. The hospital in Dar Es Salaam (the aga khan) is certainly the best of Tanzania but contrary as what it is written on the pages of the ministries for the foreign affairs, it is far from being close to the European standards. The doctors were qualified, but they did not have money for the minimal hygiene, not the means of changing cloths enough, not the means of having air-conditioning and a generator when electricity braoke down, not the means of being correctly trained on the material…. The insurance (Europe assistance) paid the expenses of the hospital but wanted to pay me only the hotel and not my food, neither my taxis, nor my telephone…. They did not send an European doctor to see how was really the hospital, they made confidence with the doctors on the spot who told them that the hospital was very nice and competent…. I lived a nightmare waked up during 7 days. Fortunately my husband is well today, he is always in hospital, he has a stomy (pocket and artificial anus) but which is only provisional and in few months all of it will be almost as if nothing had occurred.

Posted: Sun October 5, 2008 03:59 PM UTC
My step-son borrowed my tent two weeks ago with his friends and he hasn't returned it. I told my husband to better call him to return it and make sure that he cleans my tent and better be not moldy. If he folded it while it was wet, I am pretty sure, mold grew on it already as it had been raining a lot in Washington state!

Anyway, I told my husband that Washington state's plant is "MOLD"! And, he started cracking up.

More:

Wisconsin, USA state's bird: the mosquitoes and cow flies. These are huge! I've been biten by mosquitoes so many times. These are so huge!
