not happy after last night

Went to a Morrissey gig last night. Half way through second song, some idiot in audience throws a bottle (looks like water on you tube footage), hits Morrissey on head and he walks off never to return. No news of refund. Feelings around us were mixed, who do we blame for end of gig - cuplprit or performer? My feelings - he was not hurt, he owed us a show, he is a performer, he should have carried on. Do performers have the right to withdraw services? Is there another reason for the walk off? Any thoughts?

A personal computing device appropriate for those of limited vision?
Posted: Sun November 8, 2009 03:45 AM UTC
Everyone, I am looking into a computing device for the official spousal unit's mother, who has macular degeneration, thus has trouble reading text of less than 20 points or so.

I have heard that Macs lend themselves better to use by the visually impaired, perhaps by changing the entire screen resolution to something that is legible. I am very familiar with PCs and Windows, and while you can blow up some areas (web browsers on HTML pages that are tolerant of zooming, PDF files, etc), eventually, the visually impaired person will get stuck because something they need to see is in a font that is too small. Lord knows that even I - who have been in data processing for more than 30 years - don't have a clue what some icons mean sometimes. And the more Windows 'advances', the harder it is to use.

The use will be primarily for email, web browsing, and perhaps viewing DVDs, not heavy duty stuff.

Who has experience with people with limited vision and personal computing devices who like to share?

Newspaper Death Notices Emailed To You Each Day
Posted: Sun November 8, 2009 12:45 AM UTC
At the intersection of the last page of the sports section and the first page of the obituaries in the Chicago Tribune was an ad placed by the Tribune to have the above service emailed daily. Intriqued by the ad I delved a bit more into it and found that you could customize what was sent to you by the following criteria:

City, Profession, Year of Birth etc.

My question to everyone is this. Would you want this daily service in your inbox each day?

It occurred to me just a minute ago that several of us seem to meet the criteria for being ancient flower children. So roll call of all hippies!

Because George, the elusive Hubby, has decided he wants to go too! So, Davey, WE will be picking you up in the danged PT Cruiser (I hate that car!!!!!!!) instead of the Jeep! Nowhere near the space available for roadkill, nowhere near the room for shopping trip finds, can't even hang you head out the windows and howl at the moon (or other drivers) because the Germanic hubster is in the car!!! Dag-nab-it (as me sainted Mum used to say).
Don't get me wrong, I adore the hubby, but really how can I act a fool with him there? Hummmmm???? I ask you!
So, Zana, I have signed him up as a guest, knowing full well that he won't ask off of work in time to get approval,..........I'm feeling better already!

Have you ever stranded in dreadful situation ?
Posted: Sat November 7, 2009 12:03 PM UTC
This sounds like something out of the X Files or from Alfred Hitchcock.
it’s real thing had happened on Mumbai- Pune expressway
The guy drives to his hometown and decides to take the new expressway as he wants to see the scenery. The inevitable happens and when he reaches the mountain way, his car breaks down and he’s stranded miles from nowhere. Having no choice he starts walking on the side of the road, hoping to get a lift to the nearest human habitation. It’s dark and raining and pretty soon he’s wet and shivering.
The night rolls on and no car goes by, the monsoon rains are so strong he can hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly he sees a car coming towards him. It slows and then stops next to him. Without thinking the guy opens the car’s door and jumps in. Seated in the back, he leans forward to thank the person who had saved him when he realizes there is nobody behind the wheel !!! Even though there’s no one in the front seat and no sound of any engine, the car starts moving slowly. The guy looks at the road ahead and sees a curve coming. Scared almost to death he starts to pray, begging the Lord for his life.
He hasn’t come out of shock, when just before he hits the curve, a hand appears through the window and moves the wheel! The car makes the curve safely and continues on the road to the next bend. The guy, now paralyzed in terror, watches how the hand appears every time they are before a curve and moves the steering wheel just enough to get the car around each bend. Finally, the guy sees lights ahead. Gathering his courage he wrenches open the door of the silent, slowly moving car, scrambles out and runs as hard as he can towards the lights. It’s a small town. Wet and in shock goes to a roadside inn, which is open, and asks for a drink.
They find some drink and give him, And he starts telling whoever is in the inn about the horrible experience he’s just been through. A silence envelops everybody when they realize the guy isn’t drunk, and is really frightened – he’s crying and shaking. So they give him more drink and talk about what they should do, whether to call the police or find a priest, or what next !
But just then two guys walk into the inn. One says to the other “Look, that’s the guy who got in our car when we were pushing it.”
( Have you ever stranded in dreadful situation ? I was , Once I decided to go Mumbai to Goa on a motorbike with my son, and at late night on highway, one tyre got flat, and situation was as it is in this story rainy mid-night , no traffic and in hill side area I had push my bike eight kms to reach a place where I could stay for night and next morning I got tyre repaired and proceeded to further journey.)

Queensland (southern) under attack now by water - northern NSW as well !
Posted: Sat November 7, 2009 11:18 AM UTC
Spare a thought for our VT members and travel visitors in Coff's Harbour.
The wonderful holiday spot on the North coast of NSW.
The early wet season tropical downpours have certainly been heavily downpouring. Severely affecting towns widely in that area.
Already inundated with the main north-south highway through the coastal city cut, (per weatherzone.com.au) "The total 24 hour rainfall for Coff's was an astounding 360 millimetres, making it the wettest November day in 66 years of records and in 45 years of any month ..."
Many more details on that site in 'weather news'.
Our faithful member 'unravelau' could be experiencing real trouble !?
Are you there Carole - or Grandchild ?? We're worried.

And then there were 2.
Posted: Sat November 7, 2009 11:11 AM UTC
Rain drizzles, blurring sight and making the pavement glisten.

It is 9 am and quite abnormal for the atmosphere to be draped in so much grey.
The overcast turned the streets to bare building devoid of humans.
The rain blankets the noise from the occasional car.

Over my head 5 sparrows sit silently on a sagging power-cable.
I follow, with my eyes, a wet dog loping up the balustraded steps at the front of the church.
It moves its head, pointing its nose at vague washed-out smells, but never slows or stops.

I hear a flutter and look up.
Now they are 2.
One sparrow chase one other down he street.
The fifth is nowhere to be seen.
The one pair left shudder and fluff their feathers and close their eyes.

Perhaps I will not go on my regular walk today.
Perhaps I shall sit in the balcony and watch my world being showered, scrubbed and cleaned.
Perhaps I might sit down and read for a while.

So...what are you busy doing today?

It's pheasant shooting season here. That means the wretched things flee the farm across the street and hide in the gardens on this side. Helluva a clucking noise every morning.

Now a pair of owls seems to have taken residence in the tree outside my bedroom window - hooting at each other all night.

I may have to try the guest bedroom tonight.

Anyone else missing out on a quiet night's sleep?

PS Got my revenge in advance last night - dinner was pheasant with blackberry sauce - delicious.

Bob Dylan singing Christmas Carolos???
Posted: Sat November 7, 2009 05:07 AM UTC
SUSAN, YOU ARE GONNA LOVE THIS!!!

Finished work at 2pm, came home, had lunch, then started to tackle my ironing. Having always listened to "Bob" while ironing, this then became my perfect opportunity to play my new CD "Christmas in the Heart" (although not really looking forward to what I anticipated hearing!!!)

Let me put it this way, I am just glad that my $21.99 is going to 2 worthwhile charities - World Food Programme and Crisis!!! Yes folks, thats right ... its that bad!!! And I dont think Ill be playing it on Christmas Day - my familoy would run a mile!

Now ... any of you out there that know me, even slightly, will know that I absolutley love, worship and adore Bob Dylan. I also have quite a fondness for Christmas Carols, guess thats because I was forced to go to Church for 20 years and they were drummed into me!

However .... these 2 loves of mine DO NOT GO TOGETHER VERY WELL AT ALL! And it pains me to say this. The CD was rather disappointing, but was as I had expected it to be. Some songs took me back to Dylans religious period (Saved etc.) which I did not like back then and still dont.

The music itself is very traditional and melancholy, the background singers and harmony is very traditional also and angelic, BUT the mix of Bob's voice does NOT work at all. His voice is as it always is - rough, rugged and raw, and anything but traditional and classicly Christmassy! The whole concept and sound is quite simply "strained" and sadly ... not good!

So yes, Bob Dylan should indeed stick to what he does best :)

What can I say to the parents of a young man who was just murdered.
Posted: Sat November 7, 2009 12:11 AM UTC
I just learned that one of the young men killed at Fort Hood, Texas, yesterday was the son of a friend of mine who lives in Utah. I know that Susan (Council14) has a close personal connection with some of the victims, but I definately wasn't expecting this incident to come knocking on my own front door. I know that some of you have recent experience in comforting grief stricken family members and friends, and any of your suggestions would be welcome. I am totally speechless and I don't know what to say to my friend. The young man was only 19 years of age, and should have just been starting his life.

How to clean a computer keyboard
Posted: Fri November 6, 2009 10:37 PM UTC
Hello,
I have a prolem. Is it really so that my laptop keyboard is dirty and that causes the letters disappear?
The keys don't seem to get contact unless I press them very hard.
How can I clean the keyboard? I guess there's one of those aerosols available (pressured air, right, or something like that?).
It gets a bit annoying to hit the letters very hard! The problem started last week or so, nothing before that.

Of course they have volunteer quotes on the website, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them at all. Thanks.
