How did I get NINE pictures in Travelogue??? How did I do that?
Posted: Sat July 4, 2009 06:29 PM UTC
I read somewhere before that somebody got 12 pictures in his tip or something, but I did not check it out...Now I was uploading my travelogue yesterday and for some reason, I ended up being able to get 9 pictures in (thinking some pictures did not uopload so I chose other pictures)...I was using a very high speed computer at the hopsital while I was on-call (waiting for obsteteric patient to have baby and filling up the time)..and I just noticed 9 pictures after I hit Save and Finish...Can I do this more consistently and not accidentally? We can out more than 8 pictures now per page? Thanks, Norman :)

Glitch in the display of websites in the travel guides? Long URLs are broken, don't work
Posted: Sat July 4, 2009 03:43 AM UTC
Morning all experts and VT techies.
Something seems to be wrong with long URLs in the travel guide section. Long URLs with one or many line breaks get "cropped" at the end. The whole URL appears but the last few letters/signs/numbers are "disconnected" from the link itself and appear black and not blue. And these links don't work.
BUT these links work perfectly on the respective VT'ers page!

Example, GrandmaR, Venice, travel guide, (at the moment) 4th tip "Morning excursion from the ship":
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Italy/Veneto/Venice-140867/Things_To_Do-Venice-San_Marco_and_Piazza-R-1.html
The link's last letters: n_marco.htm are what a meant when I wrote disconnected from the rest of URL.
On her Venice page, the link works properly (1st tip):
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/4a9c6/22643/4/

Same for me and London, via travel guide, (at the moment) 7th tip "Her Majesty's home is open only in summer":
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Greater_London/London-309228/Things_To_Do-London-Buckingham_Palace-R-1.html
broken in the travel guide (does not link to the correct website), but works perfect on my London page (1st tip):
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/80c21/4b7ec/4/?o=1&i=2

I hope I described that phenomenon properly. Is this something temporary? I think could be connected to the one I described here:

Morning smiles and thanks in advance.

BING Travel Servers Down
Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 05:05 PM UTC
Since VT has BING as a new advertiser on its pages, I just noticed that due to a fire last night in Seattle the BING travel servers are down until about 5:00 p.m. PST today, July 3rd. Does VT have a backup plan in case its servers go down? I'm working on a similar disaster recovery project for our servers at work and have been keeping my eyes and ears open for things like this.

VT maps?
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 05:09 PM UTC
I was just reading a comment on a members page mentioning VT maps. I have searched all over the homepage and my homepage, yet I can find no link to the VT maps mentioned. The only maps I can see are the personal travel maps. Undoubtedly, I am just being technically challenged as usual, but could someone give me a clue where to access them?

Thanks in advance,

fergy.

Problem clicking on links in NOTICES console
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 02:21 PM UTC
I haven't been able to just click on the links on the Notices console (ex: Received a new comment on a tip/ travel page, I click on that new comment link in the Notices console but my main VT page does not go to that page). I end up manually going to the page the comment was made on. I tried refreshing the console but the new comments/ratings still there. I will say this, clicking on the links did work last night but I tried it again this morning and it didn't work again. Hope it's just a glitch??? Thanks in advance.

HAS ANYONE USED APERTURE?
Posted: Wed July 1, 2009 09:42 PM UTC
Although I have been using Adobe Photoshop for years and have upgraded to CS 3, I have been told there is a new program out there for Mac users called Aperture. Has anyone used it and what do you think. Does it replace or enhance Photoshop. Do you need Photoshop to use it? It's the same price as the CS upgrade so I am trying to decided between the two especially now that my Photoshop is no longer working and my installation cd's are in California and I am in Massachusetts.

stupid question about photos
Posted: Wed July 1, 2009 08:41 PM UTC
I copied some of my photos I had posted on a website into a Word document, then deleted the photos from the website.

The photos are now saved where I can see them in a Word document, but I can't think how to copy them as separate images.

A simple cut and paste of the image gives me a 'scrap' file which is still lodged within a Word document.

Any idea how do I get ahold of the jpg file or have I lost my chance??

External Email Notifier Weird
Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 06:23 PM UTC
Maybe someone is aware of this, or maybe it's just me, but it seems that the function that allows you to get an external email to let you know when you get an email on VT is pretty sketchy. I only get an external email on rare and random occasions, so though I get at least a few VT emails a day I never know about them unless I log into VT. The other problem is that when I do get an external email they tell me that the VT email is from someone other than it is, usually someone I've never heard of. Like today I got one that said "Astrologers <daily@astrocenter.com> has sent you emails at VirtualTourist" when the only email I had was from Grantboone. Just thought I'd let you know!

My paid Zone Alarm Security Suite is running out. Have to decide what to do...

Am looking at the free Avira Anti-virus, and the free Avast Home Edition.
I currently also have the free Ad-Aware in addition to [paid] ZA.

I run Firefox on XP SP2.

Opinions, please?

Thanks!

My travel pages
Posted: Mon June 29, 2009 02:24 PM UTC
Hi all

I want to create pages and tips on several places we've been to.
But as I am making a list of these places, I am wondering what to do :
for example in Austria : we've been to a lot of places (haven't put them all in my map yet) where most of the times we've only visited 1 specific thing there. Should I create a page with 1 tip on it for each place or should I just put all the tips on a page on the global "Bundesland Salzburg" being the larger area ?
Would it be too much if you are looking for something to click on different pages with 1 tip on each page ?
And if I create the pages for each individual place, do they show when you look for info on "Bundesland Salzburg" or only when you look for that specific place ?

I hope this is clear and that you know what I mean ?!
Thanks for the info !

RSS feed - restrict to a tag on my blog?
Posted: Sun June 28, 2009 08:37 PM UTC
I have started a travel blog and have been invited to join a network of bloggers.

They are asking me to provide an RSS filter feed which will only send post related to travel in Europe.

Presumably this is done by tagging the appropriate posts with 'Europe' but how do I go about setting up an RSS filter feed. I'm familiar with the basics of the RSS feed and have one on my blog, but I can't see how to amend its settings?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Ratings...
Posted: Sun June 28, 2009 07:18 PM UTC
Why is the number of ratings for you is different in your pop-up box than in your ratings history for the week? I mean, VERY different - much more in the pop-up box. I just noticed this a couple of weeks ago when I clicked on "Ratings for You" in the pop-up box to see which tips had been rated.

Where to post cruise experiences?
Posted: Sun June 28, 2009 03:54 AM UTC
Anyone have an idea where to post my experiences on a South Pacific cruise? Are cruises listed as special destinations which I could add to my travel pages?

I cannot find any destination or key word that would make sense. There is no "South Pacific", no general "Polynesia", no "Cruise" or "Cruising"?

I will also make pages about the destinations I have travelled to, this is no problem.

But where would someone search for info about cruises?

I am sure nobody would search for a South Pacific Cruise in Brisbane, Sydney or Auckland where the cruises start. And French Polynesia which would be listed as a destination is only a small part of the cruise.

I want to list tips about choice of cruise company, cabin choice, cabin neighbours, noise, shows, food, shore tours - just everything you should think about before booking a cruise.

Anybody has an idea and can help?

Thanks in advance.

Speedy rating
Posted: Sat June 27, 2009 06:41 PM UTC
It's not exactly a technical point but what do you do when someone gives you say 40 ratings within 3 minutes and, naturally, shows complete misunderstanding what the page is about in their comment? And do such ratings count at all?

Flag Counters
Posted: Sat June 27, 2009 05:09 PM UTC
On a photography website (Flickr) I use a flag counter to see from where the people who visit my pages are from. Is there a way to do this as well with VT. Say on your Homepage and Travel pages. I have tried but not been successful. Any ideas?

Hyperlinks
Posted: Sat June 27, 2009 11:20 AM UTC
Is anyone having problems using VT?
I have not used them often in my travel pages but did recently and thought I had mastered the code.
Today all I am getting is a Yahoo News Home page.
Re-did the wanted link several times and that delivered a Tourist site of the place I wanted to Link to.
I am following the code, entering the town I want to link to after the closed square bracket, in place of Yahoo

Any ideas please?

Viewpoint Media Player
Posted: Wed June 24, 2009 02:19 PM UTC
Recently i've been getting a pop-up quite often here on VT asking me if I want to install this. Obviously I'm not going to even open it until I know what it is and certainly not going to install it! Is this something to enhance VT vids? Any other info? Also if it is a VT recommended piece of software does it take over as my default media player?

I have to go shopping for a new digital camera
Posted: Wed June 24, 2009 11:34 AM UTC
My old camera is breaking down, and I've decided I really need a new one. A store here is having a sale, but I don't know too much about the different models.
I'm looking into the
Canon Powershot A 2100 IS or the Panasonic DMC TZ 5
or, if I decide to spend some more, the
Panasonic DMC TZ 7 or the Olympus E420 .
Does anyone have one of these cameras and is either very happy with it or very unhappy? I'd appreciate any tips. Thank you.
