Hi,
when we were there in 2000, there was only one campground in El Cedro (see my tips). A very small town, but in the center of the island. If you have a car, you could explore the island from here. The are hostels or rooms in every town, but mostly they are not indicated. Ask in bars and shops for peoples who have a room stay; they will help you to find the person. For renting, it might be cheaper to rent a car on Tenerife and take it on the ferry. But I have no details about that.
