Currency in Turkey
Posted: Sun September 5, 2004 01:35 PM UTC
Ciao all,
I enquired about Turkish currency at a money exchange counter in Italy & I'm not sure I got the info I need. First I almost missed my train waiting for the answer (the attendant took 10 minutes on computer & phone before replying.)
She told me the Turkish currency is not available & that the currency value is not given because it's worth too little, then told me that I must purchase U.S. $ to go there.
I'm travelling in Europe now, can't research this much on the Net. I looked at a few VT pages on Turkey & wasn't lucky to fall on what I need right away so could someone help?
My available cash is Canadian $ which I get in Euros from ATM's in Europe. I don't want to change again into U.S. $, unless I have to.
I wish to know if I should wait until I'm in Turkey to obtain Turkish currency from an ATM; + what is the exchange value of a Canadian $ and of a Euro, in Turkish lire. All this to budget ahead. Thanks!
lou

Lou, u should be able to use Euro in Turkey.
I am not too sure about C$, probably not such a great exchange rate.

But for official rates, you can check the conversion on this site: http://www.forex-markets.com/quotes_exotic.htm

US$1 is about 1.5 million lira.
I can't find the cross rates bet. Euro, C$ & Lira.
So, guess you'll need a calculator ;-)

I think it's not advisable to get Lira from the ATM. You'll be billionaire!!! ;-)

Not trying to be antagonistpeic but why are people so bent on using a currency other then that of the country they are travelling in. It is actually more difficult to do this, as the vendors know the value of both currencies and use that to their advantage, furthermore I find it a bit arrogant to do this. At a time when I worked in a restaurant and internet cafe, I had numerous occassions of people insisting on paying in US dollars or pounds, genrally with the comment that you should be glad to be getting a real currency instead of your worthless lira...

1 euro = 1,833,005.28 Turkish lira
1 Can$ = 1,170,775.35 Turkish lira

For ease of calculation, I would use 1 euro = 2 TL
or 1 Can$ = 1 TL.

The exchange rate tends to be a bit volatile but it usually favours the non-Turkish lira currency.

If I were you I wouldn't worry about it. I went to Turkey this summer and couldn't get any Turkish money in Italy either. You can take euros with you. They will accept them the same way they accept dollars. I don't know about Canadian dollars, sorry! It is very easy to get cash there with a credit card or pay with a credit card. In some hotels you will be able to negociate a better price if you pay cash. Never forget to negociate anywhere you go! Enjoy your trip! We had a wonderful time there!

thank you everyone. oh and btw, I am not worried at all, I was simply asking a lil question...
and mariocibelli, hope you didn't interpret anything I said in my question as indicating that I am bent on using anything but local currency anywhere? Cuz that would mean you assumed something incorrectly.

I wanted an idea of the price of things before going mostly. But I'll survive without it. :-))
