Salerno (ancient Salernum), city and port, southern Italy, capital of Salerno Province, in Campania Region, on the Gulf of Salerno. Industries include the manufacture of machinery, foodstuffs, and textiles. A university (1970) is here. The city was celebrated in the Middle Ages for its medical school. Salerno was originally a Greek settlement and became a Roman colony in the 2nd century BC. It became an independent principality in the 9th century AD. Falling under Norman control in 1076, Salerno flourished under the reign of the Norman adventurer Robert Guiscard. In 1943, during World War II, American forces made a major landing south of Salerno. Population (1999 estimate) 142,458.

I know it's a long web-address, but it's worth checking out.

Good luck

Hi There,

I visited Salerno in 1998 and liked what I saw, but unfortunately I didn't take any photo's there. I remember the place being right on a train line (I travelled there by tour bus from Formia), and also travelled down the Amalfi Coast. They (people in Salerno) seemed to be very big on ceramics having a number of outlets in the main street. Very artistic.

I googled Salerno and looked for photographs on the University of Salerno Site (in Italian).......from the index and on the right hand side you will see a link called something like photografie.......a click on that brings up some pretty pictures of the area.

Regards,
Carole

the antique quarter is a nice place to explore (via dei mercanti) lots of little shops and at night people gather at the north end around via roma by the bars . it gets very crowded and animated at weekends. a great restaurant is vicolo della neve in the old quarter, old fashioned but fabulous-put yourself at the waiters mercy "cosa ci fai mangiare?" i.e "what are you gonna feed us " usually does the trick.get there early or be prepared to wait (outside) for a while. at the south end on the lungomare there is usually something going on at piazza della concordia- funfairs/sellers etc ,its a nice walk along the seafront and weekends find the local youth hanging around the bars further down the seafront.
you can also get ferries to sorrento/amalfi/naples etc from the piazza.
