Stirling Shopping in Stirling
Posted: Fri September 3, 2004 01:17 PM UTC
I have planned a holiday in Scotland [ next year ] and have chosen Stirling as a home base. I will be arranging my accomodation with a travel agency [b&b's] but would like some local knowledge on day tours. For example to the Highlands etc. Are there any day trips from Stirling and will it be possible to book when I get there or should I make the arrangements before I leave Australia. Also I saw on the net about a shop in a village somewhere outside Stirling where you could buy hand made woollen clothing. Does this place exist or was I just dreaming about it! I intend to buy some nice woollen garments in Scotland and was wondering about how much I'd pay for say a jumper or scarf etc. from a department store. Thanks in advance.
Cheers....................Louise

I found a small shop that sold wolled garment; see kilt...It was in Melrose.

I don't know the name of this shop. Melrose is a very small place though.

Melrose is two hours from Edinbourgh by bus. It is a nice place to go.

Hello Louise,
If you make it up as far as Elgin there is the famous Johnstons (1797) woolen mill and cashmere centre you'll find their site at
http://www.johnstonscashmere.com/.
Costwise, well that can be high but then again it is the best in the world there are some deals to be had though if you're lucky. Average cost of lambs wool jumper in the region of £40-£60 a Cashmere jumper £140-£200 but I have seen them as low as £95!
There should be plenty of tour from Stirling all depends on the time of year you are thinking of visiting? as to what's available. If you do get as far as my area in the Northest highlands, please keep me in mind for a tour around my part of the Castle & Whisky country that is Speyside. Elgin where the local train station is, for your info Speyside is about half way between Aberdeen in the East & Inverness in the West. Hope this is of help to you and if you need any other questions answered please just drop me a line on here or via my website.
Cheers
Roy

Hi Louise,
the whole of Scotland is full of woollen Mills, finding one will be less of a problem than choosing one.

I think the Woollen Mill at Aberfoyle is the one. you were told about. I like to visit there too.
Stirling is a good base for trips by bus or train to, for example Edinburgh, Glasgow, and St Andrews.
Also the Stirling area is very nice, you could go to Callander, Loch Katrine, the Trossachs and Aberfoyle. Go to Perth and then on to Pitlochry for lovely views and clean air.
The price of a jumper or scarf would depend on the material but shop around before you buy
