Roads around Merzouga
Posted: Wed September 1, 2004 12:19 PM UTC
hi - one more question (this should be the last one!)

I'm getting completely confused about driving to merzouga. some books and sites say that the easiest route is from erfoud (road then piste). others say that the easiest route is now from rissani (a new road - but it is difficult to find as people keep hiding the signs).

some say that a local guide is essential, others that it is easy to find your own way.

what is true? we will be driving a small rental car. advice from someone who has travelled that way recently would be appreciated.

We did Merzouga in 2001. After a very short night in Erfoud (see my Morocco from Fez to Erfoud page) our Moroccan driver took us via the road and the piste to Merzouga (+- 60 km if I remember this well) to see the sun rise. Unfortunately the rising sun hided behind too many clouds..... while we were freezing. It was a wonderful experience though.
There were not many signs and I always wondered how our driver found his way.
Good luck and happy travels

We did that drive last summer with no guide. We actually tried to go through Rissani and we got lost so we backed track our way and went through Erfoud instead. It was not that hard to get to Merzouga from Erfoud but be very careful....there are really not a lot of signs on the road. I hope you got the Michellin road map. Just make sure that the car is in top shape. Bring lots of water. VERY DUSTY road. From Rissani to Erfoud we experience a sand storm that lasted at least half an hour. It was hard to see the road.
