Guesthouses in China?March Weather
Posted: Fri August 27, 2004 07:55 PM UTC
I've found some tours of China with very reasonable prices, using "guesthouses with shared bath facilities". I'm not fussy, but will be travelling with my 14 year old, who is fussier than me. Has anyone used these hotels? How would they compare to a "tourist class" hotel? Basic is fine, as long as it's clean. Also, overnight on trains and boats, should we be prepared for fleas, overflowing toilets, etc.?? (I'm asking from experience on some other trains...another story) Are tourist trains in China still kept separate from the ones locals are allowed to use? Is latter half of March still the rainy season--we would be doing a tour from Beijing to Shanghai. Thanks for your help!

So far, I never had fleas in China, and also never saw an overflowing toilet. On trains it is not seperated between locals and tourist. My guess is that you'll find more tourists in the soft seats and soft sleepers. I always stayed in hard seat and hard sleeper compartments and was mixed with the locals, but I certainly did not find it dirty. There is always an attendant in every compartment who cleans the train now and then and keeps the hot watercans filled so you can make your tea, coffee or instant noodles.

Hotels with shared bathroom can be fine, you just have to ask if you can see the room before you check into any place. There are often squat toilets, in my opinion they are more hygenic than the western type.

Enjoy your travel in China!

Thanks so much for your help! The "soft seats" sound perfect, and the hotels would be arranged by the tour company, so perhaps I'll see if I can get in touch with earlier travellers for feedback on specific hotels. Thanks again!
