| Judetul Maramures | accommodation in Maramures Posted: Tue August 24, 2004 01:00 PM UTC
Hi,
Iam trying to find some cheap accommodation somewhere in Maramures. My idea is to go to the Cementery and visit around, maybe by getting some tour because i say around there you need a car. But i cant find any cheap accommodation, and i saw few home accommodation but they seems to be far away from everything!!! i need somewhere where i can arrive by train (coming from Cluj) and somewhere where i can take a train/bus to the cementery and the village thanksssssss |

What about hotel Mara in Baia Mare presented on this page? 35€ for a single room, 45€ for a double.
http://mmtourism.free.fr/Maramures/Folklore/Maramu I remember I saw a yellow local bus when I was at the Happy Cemetery in Sapanta last summer, but I don't know where it came from. Maybe from Sighetul Marmatiei..

Hotel Mara is just about the most expensive one in Baia Mare and the city itself is not appealing, as most of it is concrete-filled. For the Merry Cemetery you can much better settle in Sighetu Marmatiei, you have 3 daily trains from Cluj going there:
Cluj Napoca - Sighetu Marmatiei - Train no. 03.40-08.54 R948/947 (daily until September 6, 2004) 05.07-10.59 A1943/1942 (daily year round) 15.24-22.15 P4110/4121 (daily year round) In Sighet there are a few good guesthouses such as Buti: Motel Buti, 6 Simion Barnutiu, tel./fax: +4(0)62-311035, 310783. However the best thing is to just go to some village off the lasrge cities, for Maramures is at its best in the countryside and not in some city. All villages there have official guesthouses (look for signposts saying "cazare" or "pensiune"), they usually charge about EUR 10 per person and some have breakfast included. There are others which are unofficial, as most people in the area have some guest room which they are eager to rent for 5-6 euros. I would especially recommend staying in guesthouses and not in hotels, as this is the best way of approaching the local lifestyle, cuisine and traditions, from an insider's point of view. From Sighet to Sapanta, where the Merry Cemetery lies, there are a few buses a day. For the other villages with great wooden churches and very interesting houses to admire, there are some scarce buses and vans as well, but you will anyway have to hitch-hike at a certain point. Mind you taht hitch-hiking is usually paid for in Romania, as some (not all, indeed) drivers expect people to pay for the ride the equivalent of an A train price on that distance (ROL 100.000 for 100 km.). You can also rent a taxi or so from Sighet and have a day trip (settle the price beforehand), it should be around 40 EUR or so for a round trip to some of the wooden churches including Sapanta. Going there by yourself is more advisable, as you have more time to discover the places and Maramures is not a place to visit in a hurry. Alex alex@futurevox.com

I stopped in a new Hostel in Sighet for less than 10 Euro ! The owners were really helpful and friendly. Sighet is ideally situated for exploring Maramures as it has Good Rail and Bus connections.
