| Caye Caulker | Caye Caulker in January Posted: Tue August 24, 2004 08:01 AM UTC
I am planning a little diving holiday to Caye caulker for a week in January 2005. Can anyone tell me if this is a good time to visit Belize? I am hoping that the weather at this time of year will not be too hot!!
Also, how easy is it to get up to Tikal for a day? I'd love to go, as my wife (who will not be coming) has been there once before, and recommended it. Thanks in advance! |

You may be able to do a day trip from Belize City, but I don't think you could manage a day trip starting from Caye Caulker.
It took us a whole day to get from Caye Caulker to Lago Peten Itza (we stayed in a small village on the lake - very cheap, very basic, nice. We overnighted there, then caught an early bus to Tikal in the morning. That way we beat the heat and the crowds. A more upmarket approach would be to stay in Isla de Flores (a town on the same lake, which has nice hotels and is quite pretty).

It is a good time to visit Belize. February is good too.
However, to get to Tikal on a day trip, you would need to get to Ambergris Caye early and fly to Belize City and then to Flores. Vans for Tikal and elsewhere meet all flights. Then you would need to hustle and see the site, then fly back to Ambergris and find a boat to Caulker. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Hi Mercutura ,
Do you know of any affordable and decent accommodation on Caye Caulker for a backpacking scuba diver? :) Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Johann

Johann,
I was a backpacking scuba diver when I visited Caye Caulker, and my husband and I just organized a simple, functional room after arriving on the island. I cannot remember the name of it, but it was not much hassle to arrange. The island is small and everyone knows everyone. We did arrive on the morning boat, though.

Can anyone tell me how much I should expect to pay for each dive (i.e. per tank) in Caye Caulker?
Does US$25 should about right? Thanks, Johann

I didn't stay at any of the places listed but it looks reasonably priced, compared to what we paid.
http://www.cayecaulker.org/cayecaulkerrentals/ Regarding diving, it really depends where you go. The distances to the Blue Hole, etc are great so boat travel costs raise the price. Expect to pay US$125-150 for the big three Blue Hole, Turneffe plus Half Moon (or Lighthouse) all day dive trip including transport, lunch, gear and three tanks.
