I traveled in Nicaragua back in 2001 and had a blast! I really wouldn't worry about it... it's just as safe as any other country in Central America. Plus it's not as touristy as Costa Rica :P. Just keep your eye out and have fun. Check out my pages for some pics..

Oh, you absolutely have to go to Isla Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua... stay at the imfamous "Finca Magdalena," where you can meet up with fellow travellers... or try a hostel in Granada to hook up with fellow travelers.... perhaps the Brass Monkey Hostel(sp).

have fun,
Fernando

PS: check out my pics and tips... feel free to email me your individual q?s or just reply in here.

KJ,

No worries... you've certainly handled El Salvador with no problem. Nicaragua is not much different... One thing you'll miss is the popusas (sp) :(. They don't make those in Nicaragua... instead they make gallo pinto, which is also found in Costa Rica... it's a mix of rice, beans, and sometimes comes with a small portion of beef. Buses are the same, being old refurbished school buses. There are more reliable and expensive minibuses between the capital and Granada making the rounds until the wee hours of the night.

Bottom line: If you travelled through El Salvador you'll do fine in Nicaragua.

have fun,
Fernando
