Should we travel to Nepal this Fall?
Posted: Thu August 19, 2004 12:26 AM UTC
My partner and I have been planning this trip for some time now. We are traveling to Thailand, Bhutan and then into Kathmandu. We were planning on spending about 5-6 weeks in Nepal mostly trekking.
We are beginning to look into other places and not go to Nepal at all.
Any suggestions?

Trekking for the most part is still ok in the popular areas of nepal. However, going from Bhutan to KTM, you should travel overland through India and Sikkim... AMAZING areas. Darjeeling is simply fantastic and Kanchenjunga National Park in Sikkim is home of great trekking. There are also some beautiful areas in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. From there you can travel to Mirik and over the border into Nepal.

hi kelley,

how're you? i know how it feels like having the dilemma of whether to go to Nepal or not, especially at this time, when travel warnings against Nepal have been released by a couple of countries.

well, i've been back from Nepal just a few days ago. i trekked as well. did the annapurna circuit. i was lucky. i didnt meet any maoist rebels. my trekking guide was a very experienced one. he was saying that indeed the maoist rebels are keeping thefts at bay in the trekking areas. of course, the media reported otherwise. and, lately, the news are just making the whole Nepal look very dangerous. but, throughout my whole month in various parts of Nepal, i always felt safe. but, my trekking guide did say that if trekkers meet any maoists, they will just be asked to pay a little sum of money as donation to the maoists' activity. (maoists are actually a political party that turn underground)

but, kelley, the situation in Nepal changes everyday. it might be ok today, and then it will seem a little dangerous the next day. but, as long as you have someone travelling and trekking with you, and you are always on alert, then you should be fine.

so, i will say, you guys should go to Nepal as planned.

hope i am of help.

joon

I was also in back Nepal earlier this year and I had a fantastic time -- I went trekking and because a lot of people are staying away with the current political situation, I found the trails almost deserted and it was Bliss !!! and I never came across a single Maoist whilst trekking (17 day trek) The only problems I encountered were
1) I had to re-plan my exit point from the trek because of a Maoist Blockade at Beni ( But I had allowed extra time in my planning so this wasn't a problem for me)
2) Some delays on the roads because of more blockades
But the advantages of deserted trails, Great deals in Hotels in Kathmandu, Sauraha and Pokhara and the fantastic welcome by the locals who are the ones that are really suffering during this political instability Far outweighed the minor delays that I had to endure.
However I would definately Fly into Kathmandu and also recommend that you also take internal flights in Nepal because of the road blockades.
Good Luck and Happy Travels
Rob

Hello,
Please do not postpone your travel to Nepal and explore the fascinating country that is Nepal, It has been proven that Nepal is safe Destination, no single tourist has been get into serous problem during the 8 year long Maoist insurgency, you of course need some spare time for Nepal It may some times road strike happen and you may not able to travel in time, as you are planning for 6 weeks that is really great I believe you can easily enjoy your Himalayan adventure. I Am handling my group all through the Year round and have no trouble with anything, except few time we donated for Maoist often not, and It was maximum US$ 100,depend on which area you are?

Hi there,

This fall, meaning around November? So have the both of you decided whether to visit Nepal?

Actually two of us (female) planned to go this Nov to do the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, which I believed is also known as Annapurna Base Camp Trek. We're looking for travelmates and since we chanced upon your post and so we are writing you this message to ask if the both of you are interested to find some travelmates to trek together? I guess it'll make us feel much safer to trek in larger group.

Hoping to hear your reply.

Cheers~*
