Kyoto-fu Recommendations for Temple Stay near or around Gion District
Posted: Wed August 18, 2004 11:10 PM UTC
My boyfriend and I will be traveling to Kyoto on September 6th and staying overnight, but leaving quite early in the morning on September 7th (must be at Kyoto Station at 6:30AM).

We had reserved accommodations at the Ninnaji Temple, but we realized that this is quite far North of Kyoto Station. We, unfortunately, have only one day and we figured that it would be better to stay near or around the Gion District. We do not really want to stay in a contemporary setting, but someplace that has some character and old world culture to it. We would LOVE to stay in a Temple if possible or anything that is aesthetically pleasing. We also wouldn't mind the outskirts (lots of foliage) as long as it didn't take too long to get back to Kyoto Station in the morning. We do not wish to spend more than 7000 yen per person, so we are willing to spend 14000 yen on a room(a little more if the place is a Gem). We won't be needing breakfast since we are leaving in the wee hours of the morning. Sharing bathrooms is not a problem.

Also, please advise me if there is a curfew, I notice that many do have early turn in hours. I really would like to make the most of my day in Kyoto and stay out as late as possible, but if the accommodations are something that are quite spectacular I wouldn't mind returning earlier.

Any other comments about Kyoto recommendations (food, sights, etc.) would be appreciated as well.

Thank you much! I've learned much from previous posts on this forum!!
