| Igoumenitsa | Car Hire Posted: Wed August 18, 2004 02:31 PM UTC
Is it possible to hire a car in southern Europe and bring it across borders? I had hoped to rent a vehicle in Igoumenitsa in Greece, drive to Istanbul and then drive up to Bulgaria. Is any of this frontier crossing possible or legal?

All the border crossings are possible and legal. The snag is whether the car rental firm allows you to bring the car abroad. It's basically an insurance matter so you can always ask and try negotiating a deal.

Please keep in mind that both Bulgaria and Turkey are out of EU and out of Schengen. This makes the border crossing procedures more complicated and might be the reason why most car rental companies will either refuse to have their cars taken across, or charge outrageous fees.
Of course, do check with them (and let us know your findings).

From Igumenitsa first to Turkey then to Bulgaria and then back again?? Sounds pretty compicated. Why
not to Istanbul and then by ferry to Bulgaria!
