| Rennes | lodging nr train station Posted: Sun August 15, 2004 07:18 PM UTC
i'm looking for a couple nights reasonable lodging, nonsmoking, nr the Rennes train station, in middle October. I may be traveling with my father, as well as my husband so need a room that sleeps three or two rooms.
Does anyone know the Campanille, the Mercurey or the Ibis -- all recommended by my uncle who visits there regularly -- the reviews don't look promising. thanks! |

There are plenty of hotels just across the road from the station in Rennes, but they can be noisy, especially at weekends
The hotels you mention are all part of a chain of hotels that are all over France - their standards are standardised, and generally as high as you'll get outside a ***** star hotel

We've stayed a few times at a Campanile. Think of it as a Motel 6 in France. It is a clean, adequate hotel room with a reasonable restaurant attached.
If you're looking for French charm, this is not for you. If you're traveling and want a decent motel near the highway, you have found what you want. They are all located near a major highway but I've never noticed noise to be a problem. Every once in a while it's a lifesaver.

thanks -- enjoyed yr home page. i would, of course, prefer something with a little more character than a chain hotel. can you recommend any place -- a pensione or B&B perhaps? Unfortunately, I have no French ability. What can we look forward to seeing in Rennes if we have a day or two there?

Three suggestions:
1) Check the home page of Guyon. He is a French man who has many very helpful suggestions. I don't know if Rennes is included but it would be worth a look. It's a great home page anyway! 2) Look at http://www.france.com and click on Hotels (right underneath the search window at the top of the page). Then type in Rennes in the search window. That should get you a few hotels. They will give you a location, price and photos and they will also give you reviews by people who have actually stayed there. The reviews usually state how convenient and/or charming the hotel is. We usually reserve on this site and have never had a problem. 3) Try the following web sites for suggestions and reviews. http://www.tripadvisor.com http://www.slowtrav.com http://www.venere.com Most tourist hotels have someone who speaks English. The only place we've run into absolutely no English spoken is at campgrounds way way out in the country. Be sure you can say please and thank you. Other than that, you'll be fine. If you run into problems, simply tell them you have a problem and they will try everything to help you. (If you tell them they have a problem, they will probably be upset with you!) It's always safest to make it YOUR problem.8^>

Sorry, I forgot. You wanted sights in Rennes.
There is the obvious, the cathedral. There is a search window above. Type in Rennes and see what you get. Also check the Rennes Forum. We've traveled a lot in France and covered most of it, but Rennes is not one we've seen. I'm sure there is a plethora of information here on the forum though.

We stayed at the Kyriad Rennes - it was very quiet, small, homey, and modern. Not American-like but modern. Not quaint but comfortable. There were two of us and our room was very nice for just us - it had a double bed and a single (l shaped) and a nice television (that's really all I need - and a good bathroom which it did have...)
The best thing was strolling out in the morning to catch the train at the gare. We were dragging luggage and happy that all we had to do was cross the plaza. Nice cafes and restaurants on the plaza too. We had no trouble getting around Rennes because you can walk from the gare or take the metro at the station. Really liked the Kyriad. The fact that it is a chain didn't bother me. I was very impressed with the breakfast buffet. So inexpensive compared to Paris!
