Whats the best way to get to the ruins? Flying to which major city? Like Cancun, Merida?

I think Cancun would be your closest airport. From there the ruins are 2 hours to your west if you had a car. There are buses that do that route as well and I assume are almost the same time. If you landed in Merida you are looking at around a 4 hour drive to the ruins. If you are interested there are a lot of interesting ruins in the area besides Itza in the area. Uxmal is not as full of tourists and near Campeche in the south. Coba is supposed to be massive and is a couple house south of Cancun and there is a site north of Valladolid (can't remember the name) that was interesting as well.
Enjoy the Yuctan
