Berchtesgaden Wheelchair hire?
Posted: Sun August 15, 2004 01:13 PM UTC
Hi, I'm holidaying in Berchtesgaden for 10 days with my entire family. We're really looking forward to it, but my mother who is 68 might find it a bit tough going when we're out and about (she has back problems which can limit her mobility). I was wondering whether it would be possible to hire a wheelchair in Bechtesgaden (or Munich, which is where we fly to - or Salzburg, for that matter). She wouldn't need it all the time, but it might be quite a good standby.
Does anyone know if it's possible, and if so, any links?

Thanks
Gotte

Hi Phil!

How's life? Just had a look at
http://www.tourismus-berchtesgaden.de/welcome.htm, which only has a very brief description in english... but I saw there are several spas and health centres in town (on the page named "Kurärzte, Kliniken & co."), so it should not be a problem to find and rent wheelchairs there. Also through this page you can contact/mail them and ask directly - probably the best option!

Have a nice trip,
P.

Hi, about a year ago we had to rent a wheelchair for my mother-in-law. We did it through a "Sanitaetshaus". Hospitals usually only give things to patients, a Sanitaetshaus is a privately run business and much more flexible.
Contact them as early as possible, there may be a waitinglist. We had to wait some time.
Here's the e-mail address of a "Sanitaetshaus" in Bad Reichenhall, very close to Berchtesgaden, which has wheelchairs:
ortho.polig@t-online.de
The website is:
http://gewerbeverein-reichenhall.de/pohlig/
They also have a store in Berchtesgaden.
If you google for more places, wheelchair is Rollstuhl in German, check for "Reha"-articles.
Good luck.

Thanks for that, guys. Great help, as ever. I'll check the links out.
Pete, great to see you again. How's life with you? Been away recently?
I've got a trip coming up after our Berchtesgaden venture. My friend and I are going to Vienna in late October. I'm really looking forward to it and hope it will be very Third Man-esque. We're staying in Nebau, which I've heard is a great district.
Ever been to Vienna?

No, never been to Vienna yet. Would love to go there once though, and see all the "Third man" locations!
We've also been away a bit, first camping in Germany/Austria and Venice in July, and after that In Russia (Kaliningrad) for a week. Also other than that busy enough, have neglected page-building here therefore... Hope to pick it up soon again!
All the best on both trips!
P.

What was Kallingrad like? It was one of the destinations my friend and I were thinking about, but Russia seemed a bit too difficult with all the visa requirements.

We actually took my wifes wheelchair with us last year and also in 2002 to the area you are going to. I just wanted to say we had no problem with the wheelchair apart from the walk from Berchtesgaden railway station up to the town. I took one look at it and knew I could never push her up so we took a taxi up and down again because it was so steep. We also took a taxi to the lake at Konigsee and back to the station. Apart from that we had no problems on the trains and in the towns. Friendly people too - one day man stopped us in the street and pointed to one of the wheels that was a little flat. When I told him we were English and spoke no German he explained in English he was a doctor and knew where the wheel could be inflated. So he took us through some back streets to a garage where a mechanic kindly blew the tyre up for us. I have never forgotten such kindness. You will have a wonderful time.
