Amalfi Emerald Grotto

So far we have read two comments on the Emerald Grotto on VT. One that it was a "don't miss sight" and one that it was a rip off. Should we go or not? Thanks.

We went to the blue grotto on the island of Capri, it was neat........I enjoyed it. I don't remember thinking it was a rip off. I would go for it if you have nothing else planned.

Thanks faceit2, but I meant Amalfi's Emerald Grotto, not Capri's Blue Grotto. Any comments from VT members would be appreciated.

THe emerald grotto on the Amalfi coast is both of those things you mention - a must see, and a rip-off. It is worth going to for the cultural aspects - going down some elevator built into a cliff, climbing into the grotto (about the size or a tennis court), getting on the little raft, listening to the guide saying "miracolo, miracolo' as clay religious figures 'appear' below the surface of the water. It is a ripoff in that it is not very impressive in terms of its natural beauty. If you don't have much time, go see other things. We were living there for3 months, so we went twice. I would say, if you happen to be going by on a bus or in a car, stop by and check it out, it's not a long tour, otherwise, skip it. There is way too much to see on the Amalfi Coast.

Well, we went to the Emerald Grotto. We took the ferry from Amalfi, which was a pleasant ride on a hot day. The grotto itself was somewhat interesting, but the rowboat tour was very brief...not really worth the cost of admission (5 euros) Since we came by boat, we didn't even get to use the elevator! Also, we were told there were no WC's, which was untrue, they were at the top of the hill accessible by the elevator. Still, we enjoyed the boat ride each way.
