| Leicestershire | Leicester Ugly? Expensive? Posted: Mon August 9, 2004 10:25 PM UTC
I'm asking this question is several forums, so forgive me if you're forced to read this again. I'm an undergrad student in the states soon to be studying in England. I'm looking for peoples opinion's on my choices of uni locations. Is Leicester ugly or concrete (as per the 60's architectural "renovations" much talked about in England)? Also, is it very expensive there? I'm also looking at Nottingham, Exeter, and Oxford as well... Any help is appreciated. -Kel

I grew up close to leicester, and in my opinion this should be your fourth choice out of the places you mention. I think it's the least attractive architecturally and it doesn't have any geographical advantages to compensate. It's not expensive, though.

Hi Kel,
What course are you taking by the way? Leicester is definitely good and reasonably cheap to live in student accom. varying from £40 p.w. onwards, everything is central and walking distance. Oxford is also a good choice, but more expensive, I've just made a fleeting visit on a day trip.

Hi Kel;
As a graduate of the University of Exeter I'd say that it was the best of the four places - mild climate (if a bit damp), lovely green campus (holding more species of plants than Kew Gardens) and with lovely countryside nearby (Dartmoor and the South Devon Coast). Oxford is lovely but very expensive. Leicester is a dump - only good for Indian food. Nottingham would be my second choice - nice campus on the edge of town, which is very friendly though not architecturally notable. Nottingham is noted for its high numbers of young single ladies, but weekend nights in the city centre can be a bit wild. The city is in a good position in central England for communications and travel. Hope this helps. Malcolm

Although ive grown up in leicester and do grumble about it, i thik it does have its nice parts. the inner city may be horrible, but the city centre and uni campuses are really nice, as id knighton and where all the student accommodation is......
be warned exeter in making huge cutbacks in some of its departments, and some are being forced to close, so research this first!

Hi, In my opinion Leicester or Nottingham are just right for students. There is a growing club and bar culture in both cities. I live in Loughborough (about 30 mins from both cities)which is also a University town and we too have a lot of new music bars etc thanks to the growing student population. I dont know about Exeter (a little remote I think)but you would find Oxford pretty expensive I think.
Where ever you decide upon, have a great stay in the UK, Regards, Steve
