Hildesheim has a very nice inner city with many half-timbered houses and a couple of very important cathedrals. They are registered as UNESCO World Heritage. There also is an excellent museum of Egyptian archaeology.

Apart from that, it's a rather small country town with about 80,000 inhabitants. Hannover with 500,000 inhabitants is just north and can easily be reached through public transportation.

VTers Knoto, Bigs and Leipzig all have pages on Hildesheim.

PS: here's a link for pre-visiting:

I also forgot to mention that the whole area -- southern Lower Saxony is quite nice -- green rolling hills, very authentic. While many tourists visit, it is not a spoilt area.

Don't know if you still visited Hildesheim. As already told, Hildesheim is a fine city with about 100.000 habitants. It's good place for living. In Hildesheim you find everything you need and Hannover isn't far away.

Hildesheim is famous for its "Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum" with one of the most significant Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Peruvian collections in Europe.

St. Michaelīs Church and the Cathedral have been named as official historical monuments on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.

The historical market sqare with its new built historical buildings (the originals were burnt in WW II) is "must" if you visit Hildesheim.

If you have more questions feel free to ask me, because I'm living near Hildesheim.
