WhirlWind Tour of Austin
Posted: Wed August 4, 2004 07:28 PM UTC
I'll be in Austin for just 1 day. I'll be arriving around 3:00 PM and will fly out the next day.

Does anyone have any specific suggestions for my quick trip. I'll have a car.

I'd kind of like to explore the 6th street scene. Where should I park so that I could walk around and catch the most given my short time ? Is there anything going on in the 6th street area during a weekday ??

Any other sugesstions would also be appreciated.

For your whirwind tour of Austin, I would suggest taking a short walk along the river (hike n' bike trail) around sunset at about 8:00pm and check out the nightly "bat show" where millions of bats fly from under the Congress Street bridge. You can park at the lot by the 1rst street bridge and Riverside drive. There is a cool statutue of Stevie Ray Vaughan along the trail that is worth checking out too. If you have time, there is a sunset boat tour that you can take to see the bats for about $8.00. The link to info is http://www.lonestarriverboat.com
There will be lots of music and things to do on 6th street, even during the week, for club listings go to http://www.austinchronicle.com
There are so many clubs to choose from, just go from one to the next until you find one that you like.
As far as parking goes, if you circle around a few times, you can usually find a spot; I usually find somewhere to park around 5th street and San Antonio; there is also a state parking lot in that same area with $5.00 parking. I have suggestions on restaurants on my Austin page depending on what you like. For $2.00 beers and a nice patio, Hickory Street on 8th and Congress is a good spot. If you make it there, if you walk a few more blocks, you can walk the grounds of the State Capitol too.
Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. Have fun!

The bats and the capitol would be the two main things imho...
Walking around 6th could also be nice to discover the few historic buildings...
Just in case it is raining (I doubt it could ever rain in August in Texas ?), I'd add the LB Johnson Library or the Texas History museum to the list...
