Day trips Posted: Wed August 4, 2004 10:07 AM UTC
Hello, I live in Germany, just got here in April of 2004 from Chicago. My husband is in the Army so we don't get much time off. We visited some of the more touristy places when he has a few days off. My question is, where could we go close by? Some place that is not going to be over-crowded with tourists? We live in a small town Volkach which is about 20km from Wuerzburg. Any suggestions could really help. Thanks.

I recommend the following cities which are near your hometown:
Bamberg 70 km east of Wuerzburg Nürnberg 100 km southeast Rothenburg ob der Tauber 50 km south Wertheim 40 km west Bad Wimpfen 100 km southwest
And there are a lot of nice towns and villages along the Main River. Just drive along the valley and have an open eye. You are lucky your husband got a job in a really nice region of Germany.
Enjoy your trips
Bernd

Thank you! Yes, this part of Germany is very beautiful. I haven't been to Bamburg or some of the other cities. I have to do that. Thanks again, Jeanette

You'r welcome Jeanette. By the way also welcome to VT. I see on your page that you joined today. Build a lot of pages of the places you visit here - for the glory of Germany ;-))
And don't hesitate to ask me for further recommendations when you finished my suggestions. There are many others - depending how far you want to drive.

Re: Re: Day trips Posted: Wed August 4, 2004 12:01 PM UTC
Hello, one more thing... My husband and I are about to spend our 6 month anniversary together. We are looking for something that is romantic, cozy and not that expensive. We are not sure where to look or where to begin. We don't want to spend an arm and a leg and with the army, we don't know exactly if he will even get the weekend off, so something that is close by... maybe as far as a half day trip? Thanks again. It sounds as if your anniversary still falls into the main tourist season! The whole area is very nice, and you should look around, there are many excellent and very affordable places.
In addition to Bernd's excellent tips, I would like to recommend the following. In the upper Main Valley, beyond Bamberg there's a small spa town called Staffelstein. Nearby Attractions include the Vierzehnheiligen Basilika and the Banz Monastery. Coburg with its towering castle isn't far away either.
The Staffelstein area is a bit remote, very cozy, very intimate. And the best: You get a lot of service for very little money.

First of all congratulations to you newlyweds. A tip for a romantik day trip could be the Rhine-Valley between Bingen and Koblenz. That's about 2-3 hours from Wuerzburg. The Rhine runs in a narrow valley between wooded mountains and vineyards. There are a lot of nice small towns and villages. The aera is touristy so there are lots of hotels, guesthouses and privat accommodations.
If you are looking for a romantik hotel see also this website:

Have fun

Another very nice town is Fulda, about 30 mins from Wuerzburg. Or Bad Kissingen, the spa ressort. Bavaria holds so many opportunities and things to see.

My husband and I lived in Kelkheim for about a 1 1/2 yrs. which is outside of Frankfurt. During that time we made a point of just going somewhere different at least once a month. Freiburg is a very nice area. We enjoyed a visit there. Weisbaden( Little farther away) is nice, I love the park there, and just walking the streets. Triberg is great. We enoyed seeing the waterfalls there. Just get out and explore. I would encourage you to go into a little bakery or a butcher and really experience Germany. Enjoy your time over there and explore while you can! Julie

You should definitely go to Bamberg as suggested above. It's a lovely place.
I live about 40 kilometers from Wuerzburg in Bad Mergentheim. It's a small spa town with a castle and a nice old town. It's also nice to go for walk through the parks.
If you come round let me know in advance and I'll meet for a cup of coffee :-)
