Re: NEED ADVICE ON FINDING A GREAT HOTEL IN DENVER Posted: Tue August 3, 2004 04:08 PM UTC
Judy- On the reasonable side: Holiday Inn, Glenarm St & 15th - a block off the 16th Street Mall, *very* downtown. 303.573.1450 Burnsley, Grant and 11th Avenue - south of downtown several blocks, but it's very nice. 303.830.1000
Mid-range- Adams Mark, right on the 16th Street Mall - close to everything 1.800.444.2325 (This place is huge!)
La-te-Da range- The Brown Palace, 17th & Tremont - also close to everything 303.297.3111
There are loads of stuff to do. Check out Botanic Gardens on York St. between 9th and 11th, City Park is a few minutes away - the Museum of Natural History is there, along with an IMAX. the Zoo is next door to it. I guess it depends on what interests you.
There's also a brand new hotel in Cherry Creek that just opened, but no reports yet. And then there's the Lowes Giorgio Hotel on Colorado Boulevard, but there's not too much to do around there.
Have a fun trip! Jeff-

Jeff, Thanks for your suggestions. I will check these out. I had looked at the Burnsley but someone had said it wasn't in a neighborhood you wanted to be out in after dark, but it looked great on the website. Judy

Judy- The Burnsley is where my Family stays whenever they come to town! It's in a fine part of town, as a matter-O-fact, the area is heavily residential. 2 blocks south is the Colorado Institute of Art (VERY expensive school), and the Denver Public Schools building. There are some very nice restaurants within walking distance. I don't know who told you it was in a bad part of town, but, I've been here for almost 47 years, have lived in the Capitol Hill Neighbourhood for at least 20 years, and certainly wouldn't suggest a place placed in a "bad part" of any town.
Sure, Denver has it's warts and all, I don't think I would venture West of Broadway late at night, and would I walk north of 17th late night? Nope. I've known the owners of the Burnsley for several years & I think my Mom went to school with Mrs. Burns (but that was before my time). I think you would be very happy with the hotel (and the pool is *really* cool!) Jeff-

Oh, yeah, forgot. If you get a hankerin' to do a B&B, DO NOT even consider the Queen Anne B&B. It is in possibly the WORST part of town (plus, it smells kinda funky). Jeff-

We stay south of the center in the Tech area, away from traffic and commotion. The Wyndham is a nice hotel and they have a shuttle to the restaurants and malls if you don't want to drive. Summerfield Suites is nearby there too, and their rates include breakfast.
There are not many "dumps" in Denver as far as the big chain hotels go. Most of those reviews are written by disgruntled ex-employees, the same employees who probably wrote those GOOD reviews that you read, too.

The Wyndam Downtown is a very nice place, but on the fringe of some pretty bad areas. If you stay south of the Tech Center, you'll be at least 30 - 45 minutes away from downtown (I-25 is a complete mess). And that estimate is on a good day. Joe, are you talking about the Wyndam by Inverness? (If so, tack another 20 or so minutes commute). Jeff-

The Westin Tabor Center on 16th and Lawrence is a nice hotel. Its pretty much the standard Westin hotel, but its clean, nice and right in downtown. The prices vary but at times you can get a good deal. If you're thinking about Cherry Creek, you might want to consider thr Four Points Sheraton near the Cherry Creek Mall. The prices were reasonable there as well.
Hope that helps. Enjoy your trip.

Re: Re: NEED ADVICE ON FINDING A GREAT HOTEL IN DENVER Posted: Wed August 4, 2004 12:36 AM UTC
I grew up in Denver, live outside in a small town but still visit downtown all the time.
I agree with Seabiscuit's hotel tips, but I would encourage you if you can afford it, go for the Brown Palace - it is my fave, but it is expensive.
South Denver (Tech Center) is too far from downtown and the traffic is murder.
I like downtown, and especially lower downtown (lots of clubs/restaurants) and the 16th St. mall shuttles are free & very convenient.
Previous tippers are right about Botanic gardens, I also like City Park and especially Washington Park (a little further south) in the daytime.
Here are some good food tips on restaurants:
http://denver.citysearch.com/best/results/8490
(starts with burgers but all different catagories are on the left) - The "editorial winners" in lower part of each category are usually more accurate.
Lastly: just a little warning: the area starting at Colfax ave. & Broadway going uphill east (Capitol Hill) past the state Capitol is very close to the Brown Palace, and it (imho) gets a little "dicey" on East Colfax later on in the evenings. It is safe, but use a little caution like in any other big city.
Have a great time, & if you have a car, come up to Boulder and the foothills/mountains too.
Enjoy.

Goingsolo- The 4 Points Sheraton used to be the "Ruby Slipper" (remember, Dave?) when I was a little kid, at Cherry Creek North and Colorado. Most of the pilots on overnights stay there, as well as flight crews. I can't comment on it (because I would embarass myself). Westin Tabor Center is nice as well, depending on which side your room is on. If you choose the Westin, get a room on the North. (I lived right across the street in the condos, very noisy). Jeff-

Re: Re: NEED ADVICE ON FINDING A GREAT HOTEL IN DENVER Posted: Wed August 4, 2004 01:02 AM UTC
I completely forgot! If you want 'the elegance of the Brown Palace, on a budget', the Oxford, 1630 17th Street 303.628.5400 (Dana Crawford's crowning jewel) Mind you, it's not *cheap*, but the service is spectacular. Evening Martoonies and a jaw-dropping dining experience in the Cruise Room. You'll be on the West-End of the Mall, but, that's okay. Nearby is a Morton's Restaurant, a seafood place (in the Oxford that I can't remember the name of), and many other sites to see. Just an option. Jeff-

McCormacks seafood is the restaurant I was referring to (took me a bit to remember the name). It's on the north-east side of the Oxford Hotel. (I didn't spell the name right, but you can't miss it). Sheesh, it's been a while, but the Sunday Brunch is amazing. Jeff-
