Travel from Bangkok to Koh Phangan
Posted: Tue August 3, 2004 11:59 AM UTC
Hi,
We are planning to be in Koh Phangan from Sep 5 to Sep 11, 2004. Which is the safest and cheapest way to reach Koh Phangan from Bangkok. Flight from Bangkok to Samui and then ferry to KP is ruled out because it is too expensive for us ! Train plus ferry is okay with us.

Thanks!

If you do not want to go via Ko Samui, it has to be via Surat Thani.

To reach Surat Thani you can ...

- fly (c. 2500 Baht one way)
- take the bus (I think from 400 Baht)
- take the train (from c. 450 Baht)

Having reached Surat Thani you need a bus to Donsuk, there you take the boat to Ko Pha-Ngan.

It is most advisable not to organize all these different means of transport by yourself, unless you are familiar with Thai habits. The best thing is to buy a combined ticket at a travelagent in Bangkok. Such a ticket for train (overnight)-bus-boat from BKK to Surat Thani costs about 1100 Baht. When you change from train to bus and then from bus to boat, signs will tell you where to go with your tourticket. These sort of things are well organized in Thailand.

I hope you are lucky with the weather, for in September normally the first heavier rainfalls occur (according to what locals told me this April).

You can take an overnight bus that cost about 300-400 Baht and that includes your ferry as well. Its pretty comfortable and air conditioned. I traveled everywhere around Thailand by bus and train and bus is the cheapest way by far. I'm not sure how old you are but you will be on the bus with a lot of other backpackers. So its also another good way to meet more people!
As for safety, I have had no problems on buses. Just make sure you have a little pad lock on your big bag - I've heard some stories where the staff go through your stuff while you're sleeping on the overnight bus.
There are many travel agents in the Khao San Road area that can set you up. Most are around the same price but shop around. Hope this helps!

you can buy a ticket for 400 baht that takes you from bangkok all the way to surat thani by bus and includes a ferry ticket from there to koh pangan. if you buy your tickets at kaosan road in bangkok (where all the backpackers stay), they will usually give you the best deal.

Hi - I'm a bit unclear on when the full moon party takes place in Oct.
According to the calendar, the full moon is 13th of Oct. But in visiting some web sites, some say they are 28th of Oct, others say the 24th.

Can someone enlighten me on where I can go to get accurate information on dates for Oct?

I have to book my flight soon, and once I do, I cannot change the departure date. I'm hoping it would be sooner then 28th.

Please contact me directly at: crunch at webcrunchers dot com

Thanx

Which calendar you checked?
According to lunar calendar, full moon date should be 15th of every month. Which is 28th of Oct.

13th Oct is Lunar 30th, which is not full moon!

I checked several websites dealing with the FMP, and they all give the October date as 28th, respectively 29th. Please, note that the party starts 3 or 4 days earlier and ends on the Full Moon Date. So, when you are on Ko Pha-Ngan between 26th and 28th October, you will get your FMP experience in any case.

There is also a "Half Moon Party", which probably will be around 13th and 14th October. I have only heard that it is not really popular and more or less just the idea of bungalow and hotel owners in another part of the island to make some money.
