Some days in Amesterdam need advise and help
Posted: Fri July 30, 2004 09:59 PM UTC
I’m going to be in Amsterdam from 8th to 12th September, my husband is going to a conference so I’m going to be alone for the first 3 days.

I need some help to understand the public transportation in Amsterdam.
I’m going to stay in Dorint Airport Hotel on Badhoevedorp that have free transportation to airport all 30 minutes. How do I go from there to city centre?
I can’t understand the GVB site about the tickets and the prices for zones.

I also need some advise on a tour I found that goes from Amsterdam to Aalsmeer, Delf, Rotterdam, Madurodam and Sheveninger in 8 hours by motor coach and it cost 38€ no lunch included. Does it worth? Don't know any of those places or where they are.
Some other advices would be welcome

Thanks

Lots of questions! First of all, don't worry as most Dutch people understand enough English to help you around.
The hotel at Badhoevedorp will be able to help you with all the transportation needs and advice you how best to get to, for instance, Amsterdam centre. Dorint is a very good chain of business hotels.

Basically, you buy a strip card (strippenkaart) to use in bus, metro and tram. Each trip will cost you an amount of strips, minimum 2. The strippenkaart has a fixed price for 10, 15 or 45 strips.

Lastly, the places you mention. Rotterdam is the furthest from Amsterdam and that's an hour by car or train.
Visiting 5 locations in a day would seem a bit much to me. Alsmeer is mostly known for its flower auction. Delft is a beautiful old town with much of the architecture you would expect in Amsterdam but is not uniquely Amsterdam at all. Madurodam is in The Hague and it is a tourist attraction park with all the highlights of The Netherlands in miniature. Scheveningen is a seaside resort, bordering on The Hague. And Rotterdam is a very modern city, where industry and harbour play a major role, as it is the largest port in the world.
If you have 3 days, I'd advise you to spend a full day exploring Amsterdam and include a canal boat ride. And a day to visit Delft, Madurodam and The Hague (the latter being the parliamentary seat of The Netherlands, lots to see there too). The third day you could go to Volendam for a taste of Dutch traditional life as it used to be.

Check out some Amsterdam and Netherlands pages here on VT, you'll find plenty of info! And search for Delft, Scheveningen, Madurodam, The Hague and Aalsmeer here at VT. They're all well described.

General transportation tips (including how public transport works) to be found at my Netherlands page:

thanks for your answer.

well about tickets i found the prices and it says 8 strips, 6.4 euros sames as one day ticket.
As the hotel is far from city centre should it be the best way, the day ticket? How many zones would be from hotel to centre?

I don't know how many strips. But don't worry. One strippenkaart of 15 will easily get you to and from Amsterdam.
Just note that if you buy your strippenkaart in the bus, you can only get a 2,3 and 10 strippenkaart. For 15 you'll have to buy at a bus or metro station.

Some more advice:

To go to Amsterdam it might be the best to take the hotel shuttle to the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and take the train from there to the Amsterdam Central Train Station (20 minutes Euro 3). Check out VT's Schiphol page: http://www.virtualtourist.com/vt/6fbd0/

Check out: http://www.holland.com/amsterdam/gb/
and click on AMSTERDAM PASS . It may be worth while to combine your Amsterdam public transportation travel with some free museum visits and discount on a number of attractions.

Full info on the STRIPPENKAART at: http://www.vbn-bv.nl/ovinfo/algemeen_en.asp?vPaginaID=1186&vOrgID=14

Furthermore this site gives you up-to-date Amsterdam info (http://www.simplyamsterdam.nl/ may be an alternative site to check).

A daytrip with a bus is something I can recommend. September will not be that warm, so take your trip dependent on the weather. The one you mention is OK.

senhora Catarina,
I saw you have had already some good tips. In addition of this. When you like Madonna, you can go to her concert on wednesday 8 or thursday 9 september in Arnhem. Sold out , but black market prices are about the official price and at the stadium 30 min before, less i think. Leiden (medieval/canals) an The Hague (formal, space, shops, museums) both not far from Badhoevedorp are nice cities and not so touristy as Amsterdam (which is worth one or two visites, despite of the coffeeshop visiting crowds). Perhaps it is nice weather and then you can go to the beach In Zandvoort, Noordwijk or Scheveningen. When you or yr husband are a soccer fan, wednesday 8 sept is Netherlands-Tjechei in the Amsterdam Arena (train Station Duivendrecht (15 min from Schiphol); also sold out but black market 30 min before game mostly can be succesfull.
Bom dia

Hi
I also am a lady who travels to Amsterdam alone (I get 2 weeks here every year, aren't I lucky!) .If you have a whole week here I would advise you to travel to the places you want to go by train, the Dutch railways are very easy to use and are clean/cheap/efficient and reliable! The motor tour is ok but you would find I think that you were somewhat herded along with not much time in any one place.
THe best site to use for planning trips ~ you could even print the info and take it with you as I do ~ is the NS Dutch Railways website. Here you can plan a journey and it will give you times/platforms/prices and return journeys

If I can help more please email me, i know the city very well and would be happy to answer any queries.
Here is the Railway website for you

We just did Amsterdam for four days and bought a 3 day Amsterdam pass (got in late the first day). It was well worth it. Includes two canal cruises, unlimited metro, tram and bus, as well as admission to many museums and many other freebee's or discounts at restaurants and shops. It was great not to have to worry about buying more tickets for transit. I think I paid around 40 euros for the 3 days.

Hi,
There is not really public transport to the hotel Dorint at Schiphol airport, to be honest it is kinda in the middle of nowhere ;-)
There is a shuttleservice that the hotel provides between the hotel and schiphol airport. Inside the terminal building you will find the trainstation.

Trains will go to Amsterdam regulary and it will take 15-20 minutes.

About the tour,
You will have a quick impression on all of those places. They will leave around 930 am from DAMRAK in Amsterdam. It is worth it if you want to see it all, that's why they organize them. but remember that you will not have time to wonder around on your own.

Have a good trip!
And if you have a late arrival on sept 8th, make extra sure that your booking has been confirmed!! The IBC conference is the most busiest period in the year.
I use to work for the Amsterdam Tourist Board and there will be no hotels left within 100 kms from amsterdam!!
