What is the recommended currency for the area? Should I convert all of my money to euros, or get travellers checks. Do many places take debit cards? I don't have credit cards, so I'd like to be very prepared when I get to Portugal.

Yes, I believe you should convert some money to euro (pocket money for your arrival and first days and some extra for safety). Apart from that, I donīt think you'll be needing travellers checks (though you might bring them along just in case). You'll find here plenty of ATMS (called "multibancos"), which will accept your debit card (as well as credit cards). However, the majority of restaurants and shops won't accept foreign debit cards (just credit cards). Hope to have helped you and have a nice stay here in Portugal.

you'll lose money with them... bring some euros and use ATM's there is one everywhere... Some stores acepts forineer debit cards .. don't now where.
