| Gimmelwald | Is Gimmelwald accessible in November Posted: Thu July 22, 2004 11:01 PM UTC
Hi-
Would like to see Swiss village of Gimmelwald high in the Alps during first week November. How much snow will be on the ground. Will I still be able to hike down to Lauterbrunnen Valley? Fidinoir |

I do not know how high Gimmelwald is, but the Jungfraujoch is approximately 4274 meters high, and in November will have fresh snow. However, I doubt that there will be any snow at that time of year in Lauterbrunnen, which is far down in the valley at only about 1100 meters. Even in winter, the snow level stays around 1500-1600 meters, which is the level of Murren and Wengen, and it is hard to ski right down to the valley, unless there is fresh snow, and it stays around for a while (not often). However, for hiking, you can hike year round, snow or no snow, even if you have to strap on your aluminum snow shoes. But, will the hut you are visiting be open? It may be closed after the Fall hiking season, late-October or so, and not yet open for the winter season? Better check that out, as I have never been to Gimmelwald, only the surrounding area. Cheers. Bill.

I think you mean Grindelwald.
In the beginning of november there won't be snow, it is a bit to early (but you never know!!!).

There is a Gimmelwald perched on the cliffs above Lauterbrunnen next to Wengen, and Grindelwald is in the valley on the other side of the Jungfraujoch. Tscheussli.

Douby if here'll be snow so early in the winter season but you'll still be able to hike down from Gimmelawald to Lauterbrunnen - we have done this in Jan. with snow. Hope you have cker weather for the wonderful views.

You shouldn't have any trouble hiking down to Lauterbrunnen. I have done it in September. It can be a bit steep in places, but you will have wonderful views across the valley to Wengen.
Enjoy John.
