versaille: what to do Posted: Wed July 21, 2004 12:57 AM UTC
Hi, I will be in Paris in late august/early september and would like to do a day-trip to Versailles. Does anybody know how long it takes to get there from Paris? (city center) And any advice on what to do/things to see while there? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks :)

Its about 1hr to 1:15 trip, maybe be slightly longer, i went there two years ago. Getting there is not too hard; in your hotel you will be able to get easy directions. Definitely go on a Sunday, that’s when the musical fountains are active (summer only). The Versailles it self is amazing, but the gardens are definitely a spectacle, so make sure you leave some time just to walk around and hang around.

Take RER C5 - Versailles Rive Gauche from, say, St. Michel Notre Dame station. (Wait for an RER starting with a "V")
Lots to do at Versailles Palace. Guided tours (extra cost) gets you into places where the self-guided tours do not. (We saw the royal potty last year.)
And if you have time, go visit the nearby town (where RER C8 terminates at Versailles Chantiers station). Check out the lapins (wabbits) hanging in the butchery store, for example. :)

From Paris, take RER line C. When you purchase the ticket, ask for the Chateau de Versailles combined return journey and entrance pass. Actually, it is a card (which you can later keep as souvenir) with 2 way train tickets.
From Paris, it is approximately 30 minutes by train and another 10 minutes or so, on foot. There are 2 access - V Rive-Gauche and V Chantiers. I suggest getting off at V Rive-Gauche as it is the nearer station to the palace.
There are a lot see in the palace, take the train ride around the grounds, and walk along its vast gardens.

sorry, but i can't remember the exact fee we paid. was it euro15? the advantage of that was, we were given priority entrance to the main palace/chambers including audio equipment. also, there were portions of the garden not open to other visitors, but the moment we showed our card, we were allowed entry. hence, our private joke: we call it the "powerful card".
