Hluhluwe Game Reserve Driving time / distance
Posted: Tue July 20, 2004 04:57 PM UTC
Hi there!

I am planning on staying at Hilltop Camp after spending a night in Swaziland (en route from Kruger). I was wondering if anyone knows approx how much time I should allot for driving from Mkhaya Reserve (near Big Bend), Swaziland, to get to Hluhluwe. Always hard to tell from a map, as one can't account for driving speed, etc.

Thanks!

We drove from Big Bend to Sodwana Bay, which wasn't too far from Hluhluwe and if I remember correctly it took about 4 hours or so. The roads are in good condition - no problems. Hope that helps...

Hi!

I just returned in Switzerland after 2 wonderfull weeks in South Africa and Swaziland.

Like you, I was en route from Krueger and I stopped 1 night in Swaziland (Piggs Peak, in the north of the country) and I stayed 1 night in Hilltop Camp.

We covered the distance in about 6 hours with few stops and from Piggs Peak to Big Bend it took about 2 hours. So I think you should plan about 4 hours.

Roads are good (with few traffic if compared with Europe) and usually in most places the speed limit is 100 or 120 km/h.
From the park gate to the Hilltop camp it takes about 45 minutes (speed limit: 40 km/h).

Mirko.

Agree with previous postings. Just wanted to add that when I visited Hluhluwe last yea, although we had a hire car, it was well worth taking the organised morning drive from Hilltop. We were sitting much higher up and also the drivers, who were in contact with one another, enabled us to see some animals (notably lions that morning) which we would probably have missed otherwise - they seem to fan out over the park and then let others know where certain animals are.
