Covilhã Covilha Siren?
Posted: Sun July 18, 2004 04:54 PM UTC
I am writing a piece set in Portugal and I would be grateful for any help. In 1994 when we visited Covilha, there was a very loud siren near the railway station that went off about twice a day. Does this still happen, and why? Diolch yn fawr/thank you very much!!!

That sirens are usually to sign the beginning and the end of work in factories I’m not sure if it still there.

Covilhã Dear Mcb,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. We spent quite a lot of time in Lisbon and it remains my favourite city, even better than the one I was born in, San Francisco. I hope someday to introduce my new boyfriend to the delights of Lisboa - obrigada.

The MCB answer is correct, but the siren whistle not only for the begin and end of the working day in the factory but also in the beginning and at the end of lunch time. The Fire department also use this kind of siren to call all volunteers in case of emergency. This happen not only at Covilha, it happens all over the country.

Jorge
