A Day in Maastricht or Delft
Posted: Thu July 15, 2004 04:18 PM UTC
Hi,

I will have one day to spend in the Netherlands. I was planning to see Maastricht, but I see a warning about construction at the Vrithof, which I think is the main tourist area, with the cathedral. How bad is this? If it would interfere, I will go to my second choice of Delft, since both are about the same travel time by train from where I will be in Brussels.

Thank you

John

I think the resurfacing works on the Vrijthof square are completed. I saw that the May-fair was held again at the square. Well Delft or Maastricht; a difficult dicision. I visited Maastricht last year (see my VT-meeting T-logue) and have an invitation for Delft.

Hi John , well this is off course your decision .Maastricht is a beautiful City ,and Delft is a beautiful City ,for 2 reasons I would make Delft your choice , no 1 I was born there and lived there 25 years so I know it pretty good ,and 2 reason in this City they banned all cars in the City centre ,and that is really nice .
Which ever City you choose John have a great time while you are there .

Both are beautiful cities indeed. And the choice is a hard one to make. But in favor of Delft.. There is also The Hague and Scheveningen very close by. So in th eoff chance you have seen most of Delft and you have a few hours to spare, you can visit the Hague or if the weather is nice have a drink along the beach..

But Hans - there are no cars allowed in the city centre of Maastricht either. Just to get to the squares for taxis that's it.

Let's not forget about Sandra's idea ,John could take a the Tram line 1 from Delft , and be in Scheveningen in about half an hour or so and John would love
den Haag ( the Hague )(Maduredam ) and Scheveningen .
This is on the North Sea John , a beautiful resort area with awsome boulevard and a Pier .
Hi Sandra congrats with selling your house /
Bye everyone

Thank you all for your advise. I am conflicted, of course. I was originally going to see Delft & the Hague, but the train takes longer than to Maastricht, so I then decided on Maasricht, with Delft second. My time on this trip will be precious, so I want to see SO much I will most likely be exhausted. I have ten days, including arrival day in Brussels. I have to stay every night in Brussels, so I must restrict how far I go each day. I want to see: AAchen, Lille, Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp, Tournai, Dinant, Namur, Maastricht (or Delft), Waterloo, the WWII battlefield in Ardennes, maybe Trier & Luxembourg! So much, and I know I won't be able to see it all. And of course, Brussels itself.

Thanks again and any suggestions are welcome.

Hi John , wow this will be a challenge for you .I now lean to suggest to you to go see Maastricht and keep Delft and the Hague for another time .Going from Brussels to Delft and back in one day is possible but it will be a long day and a tiring one .
You alone can decide this John ,and I wish you again a good trip an a fun time , send us a few lines after your trip John that would be nice greetings

Do keep in mind that according to popular internet gossip the Hague will be swallowd by the sea like atlantis in 2007. I'm not sure when you plan to be back but you might want to think about it. Why do you think i sold my house :-)

Hansi, am packing up. Have bought a great backpack and have 6 weeks to go. Hope to make it all the way to windsor eventually :-)

Isn't the 'Girl with the Pearl Earing' in a museum in the Hague? That might be a reason to go there, especially if the city will be under water in 3 years!

The 'girl with pearl earring' can be visited in the Mauritshuis (the Hague). Actually the whole museum is worth visiting. But i guess that in the off chance that The Hague will disappear under water they'll save the art collections :-)

Hans, i'll keep you guys updated whenever i find a decent internet cafe. Do you think i can hold out for long without VT with my addiction to it.. You don't get rid of me that easily..

Is it possible to see Aachen & Maastricht in the same day? They seem close to one another, but I am afraid I will not see enough of either to be worthwhile.

Oh yes you could easily do that. For instance start early in Aachen and then after lunch go to Maastricht for the laste afternoon and evening.

I am considering Maastricht and den Haag, now. What train station is best to use in den Haag to be closest to main attractions?

For Den Haag you can either go to Central station or Hollands Spoor. Central is a tad bit closer but it might be easier to get to Hollands Spoor. Anyway, it doesn't matter much. Tickets purchased for the one will allow you to travel to the other. Just catch the first one that comes along.

About what to see, have a look around at the excellent the Hague and Schevenigen pages that are here on VT. Same goes for Maastricht.
