I assume that you are looking for a room to stay for several months. If you are, then I suggest that it is best to look when you arrive rather than trying to arrange something over the internet.
The best place to look for a room in a shared house is probably the local newspaper, The News. Their website is www.thenews.co.uk although they don't have the full range of classified advertisments online. If you are coming to study, the University will have an accommodation service you can take advantage of. The Southsea area probably has the best range of accommodation, but many other areas of the city are cheaper. There are plenty of hotels and B&Bs in Portsmouth to stay until you have found your permananent room. The Ibis is one of the most central to the city centre. http://www.ibishotel.com/ibis/fichehotel/gb/ibi/14

You might want to try the University of Portsmouth as they have often have a lot of rooms available at that time. Most are really central too, so great to get around. Try emailing them at
student.housing@port.ac.uk Good luck...

I have some houses that I rent out to University students in the summer months July and August in Portsmouth (Southsea area).
I do get students comming over from Europe who either look for work or study English at the language schools here or students at Portsmouth University who also stay for the summer. Take a look at my web site www.karl.naumann.btinternet.co.uk it has all the details and pictures of the houses/rents/locations etc. The rent starts at £40 a week for a room sharing a house (depending how long you will be staying) Rgds Karl
