I love Michel's answer ! Wearing shorts, with sunglasses, sandals and carrying a camera around the neck may entail a slight amalgam with the typical tourist's suit...

I disagree! Parisians wear shorts more often than before during the summer! Tongs are so successfull! It is very fashionable to be dressed here like on a coastal city. The best example is "Paris Plage" : from 20th July to 20th August, the roads along the Seine are closed, and transformed into a look-like sea shore, with sand beaches, grass beaches, palmtrees, open air concerts, solariums, and even a swimming pool! It is so successfull that the idea was exported to other cities worldwide. My last words : do not hesitate to wear shorts and tongs in Paris, and especially during "Paris Plage"! You will look like a real fashionable Parisian!...

have a nice time, and don't care about the clothing... :) goy

Just so you know...tongs are not what you flip your hot dogs with. They're what we Americans call thongs or flip-flops ( the platic beach shoes). And while I agree that parisians wear tongs (you see a LOT of them!)...very few (especially women) wear shorts EXCEPT for at the plage (in Paris or the real ones)
I also agree that everyone will know and welcome you as a tourist...so be your most comfortable self!

I agree with Fossettes: Parisian may wear plip-flops but no shorts (except on the beach of course) but in any event you will most probably look like a tourist anyway, anyow, which is not a shame.
When I travel to Maghreeb, even with a djellabah I don't really look like an Arabic not like a Berbere I'm afraid...
Maillekeul, you forgot to mention the socks with the sandals!

I saw Parisians wearing shorts but can't say if it's too typical or too non-typical. Although I'd say for sure that tyen don't wear shorts in winter time.

It's easy to spot the tourist in Paris. They're the ones NOT wearing American style t-shirts. And NY Yankee caps. OK, that's a slight overstatement.

IF you don't want to wear shorts you could probably wear capri pants. I saw them everywhere when I was in Europe.

Usually the capri pants are worn by the women. Not sure if the guys would want to copy them.

As usual Yubert, your input is greatly appreciated. Your views are always very accurate, espacially regarding Parisians, that, apparently, you know very well.

Racial prejudices are deap-seated (even if I never heard of that one concerning French women): Germans don't shave their legs, Americans are fat, etc. I sadly notice that they can be heard even on an internet site where people are supposed to be a little bit more educated and aware of what's going on outside their own country.

I had the same concern last year when I went to Paris and to be honest, it was just too darn hot in July to care if I looked like a tourist. I figured once I opened my mouth (I don't speak French) I would blow my cover anyway. Be comfortable and wear shorts. You're probably going to be doing mostly touristy things anyway. At night, if you want to blend in a bit more and if you want to dine somewhere nice you should probably return to your room for a change of clothes into pants if you feel the need.
