Somalia Coca Cola is back!
Posted: Mon July 5, 2004 12:49 PM UTC
A new Coca Cola bottling plant has been opened in Mogadishu to replace the former plant which was destroyed more than ten years ago. The new plant will employ up to 500 people, about 100 of whom will be security guards.

What is the most remote or strangest place you have encountered Coca Cola, or any other icon of "western civilisation"?

When I was living in Kenya I was surprised to find Coca-Cola in the remotest and poorest villages. Plus it costs less than a loaf of bread. I think it's very sad.

I can't think of anywhere I've been that I couldn't buy a Coke! I personally think "globalisation" is generally a good thing - if people don't like things, they won't buy them, but I don't see why people in a particular country shouldn't be sold things they might like...

I remember being particularly pleased when Smarties first appeared on the shelves in Thailand - and before that the introduction of orange juice there (which was wierdly impossible to find on my first visit).

Cheers,

Jeremy

I have nothing against globalisation and I agree that people should be able to buy the products they like. I just somehow feel that for example for the poor in rural Kenya buying Coke is not an educated, informed choice. They could be spending this money on their children's education or orange juice for example. But they see a big sign next to the highway or a TV ad saying Coke is cool or whatever and they buy Coke.
