Isla de Roatán A.K.R. bad reviews
Posted: Wed June 30, 2004 02:17 PM UTC
Has anyone stayed at AKR since 03/04? I´ve read some horrible reviews. Rooms dirty, full of insects, food really bad, staff very unhelpful. I was planning a trip there but, now I have serious doubts. Thanks for any info on this matter.

I have stayed many times at AKR and have never found it to be a bad place or even the least bit dirty. The food has always been first rate.

I already have a trip booked for late September and I would not stay any place else. There are many places on the island that you will find bugs... it is a way of life on the island but AKR takes steps to rid the area of sand flys (raking the sand) and they have misquito traps all over the place so that the guest do not have to deal with the pests.

Please do go and judge for yourself and I think you will find it a loveley place.

PS... I would like to read where you have seen the bad comments about AKR.

I haven't stayed in Roatan yet, but will be travelling there in January 2005. One of our locals contacted me through my travel agent. He has stayed at AKR on a number of times. He had nothing but good things to say about the resort. This was affirmed by my travel agent. My only concern is the level of tourista activity; hence, I'm considering something a little further to the east. The Roatan news forum's most recent email had a disturbing letter from a group that just vacationed there. Too many tourists, fishing in the preserve and algae growth.

I too am a member of the news-group and Pam did a great job as always.

The part of the island and reef that was talked about is in West Bay Beach where they have marked off part of the reef as a area that sholud have fishing or reef distruction, a perserve, However with the building of the new condos and all of the visitors that come to that beach there is bound to be problems.

I have many many dives all around the island and you will find it to be beautiful. The island is surrounded by the reef and AKR takes it's folks all over the place. I do not even think there is one trip to that part of the reef.

I am returning to Roatan and AKR at the end of this September (2004) and can not wait to get back in the water.

I have no personal experience at AKR but being in the dive industry for many years have never heard bad things. Bugs? It is the tropics, Here in Florida we call em Palmetto bugs and shoo the occasional one out, others think of them as giant cockroaches.
Also, please consider who wrote about the tourists, Were the not just visiting for a week themselves?
Enjoy the Island, read what this board has to say, try new things. My home is a few miles from West bay and in heavy rain there is run off but algea is really not a problem, It is the plankton and krill that give roatan a little less vis than cayman and such but at the same time provide more nutrients for ocean life.
Also, the occasional guy in a dugout canoe fishing to sustain a family probably will cause little problem for the environment. Enjoy the trip, enjoy the Island
