We are looking for a 4 day treck in Umphang. Does anybody has some recomendations? Is it better to organize the treck vom Mae Sot or directly in Umphang?

I trekked out of Umphang a couple years ago, and I arranged everything straight from there. That seemed to work just fine. There were only two of us soloists, but we got the treatment of a group - nothing like a 2:1 guide:backpacker ratio! Of course, it was low tourist season (February), so I don't know if it's different when things are greener.
I wish I could remember the name of the place I went with. It was probably just the place the songthaew dropped me off at, or the first one up the road. All I remember is that we had a guide named Moses, and used rubber rafts instead of bamboo for the river day. I hope you have a great time; the Thi Lor Su waterfall system is absolutely amazing, and the rest of the trek should be pretty neat, too.

You don't have to book a trek in Mae Sot. You can go to Umphang and deal directly with agents. If you're going this time of year the river is probably too high for trips to the falls as Umphang has heavy rains daily during the rainy season. After the rainy season when the business picks-up it's easy to book the trip since Umphang is a small, friendly village. You might contact Pon at: worraporn_s@hotmail.com
She runs a small home stay accommodation and books rafting tours and other treks. She'll also provide any info. about Umphang. I've been to Umphang a couple of times and I'll be returning later this year so shoot me an e-mail if you're so inclined. swampybob_1@yahoo.com
