St Michaels - Mosquitoes??
Posted: Thu June 24, 2004 05:23 PM UTC
We're thinking of a short vacation to St Michaels MD. Are mosquitoes a problem this time of year in and around St Michaels, Oxford, and Easton? Does anyone have first hand experience? Our trip would be soon, in mid-July. There are a number of inns and B&Bs at water's edge on the Miles River and smaller waterways, but I haven't seen any mention of mosquitoes so far in my web surfing. Thanks!

If you are staying near the Chesapeake Bay mosquitos are always a problem. I used to leave on the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay and we had mosquitos all summer long. Avoid perfumes and get some Avon Skin-So-Soft lotion. It works great as an insect repellent.

I just read a mosquito-repellent review somewhere, and it recommended both Deepwoods Off! and Off! Skintastic -- both with higher DEET content than Skin-so-Soft. They worked longer.

I also just read an (older) article about Chesapeake Bay towns/getaways on the Washington Post website:

Here is a link to all of the Travel section stories about Maryland (many about various Chesapeake Bay destinations):

Thanks for your reply. But since we have enough mosquitos where we live, I was hoping for a short vacation without them. The insects are not in some ocean resort areas because of the breezes... so I was hoping there was some miracle situation at St Michaels.

Thanks for the links! I'll read them and possibly plan for a Chesapeake bay area trip during a time other than summer.

The "problem" with the Chesapeake Bay area is that much of it is just that -- the Bay, rather than the open ocean. There are lots of wetlands and tidal marsh areas . . . mosquito heaven!
