| Lofoten | 3 days in lofoten Posted: Sun June 20, 2004 03:49 AM UTC
Hi,
We are a couple driving up from Oslo via the fwestern fjords. We have 3 days in the lofoten islands before we move on to Tromso. Can you suggest reasonable places to stay and things we can see and do in these three days? Sundeep |

they have something called rorbu in lofoten.
it's houses that were originally made for the fishermen coming up there for the season to fish cod, but are today mainly rentet out to tourists. they work out very cheap when you are a few people. i haven't got a website for it unfirtunately, but you might be able to "google" your way to one.

everywhere is wonderful and scenic in the lofoten - except maybe the "capital" town.
i suggest you drive down as far as a i lofoten (on the southern tip) - there's plenty of rorbuer to rent. other places i enjoyed visiting are the reine and stamsund. reine: some people suggest the nusfjord boat trip and hike: ask venusia for more info as i did not do it myself stamsund: there's a walk up to a local mountain called skifjell - it takes about 60-90 minutes - and it's really easy to walk and to follow (under the skilifts - and then further up). best view i've ever seen! a i lofoten: the museum/village is beautiful and well-preserved. and the stockfish museum is surprisingly interesting. the town lake is lovely for a little walk. have fun! I stayed a week and wished I had stayed longer rhia

The most beautiful area of lofoten is the southern part, for the best views stay there. However the Northern part is more populated and is nice as well like Hennigsvaer, Kabelvag and Svolvaer and the Viking farm at Borg. Lofotr Viking museum at Borg is not a must, but can be very interesting. Only place I would not stay is probably Leknes, earlier mentioned as “the capital”
Accommodation southern part of Lofoten: http://www.lofoten-info.no/Accomm.htm Probably stay at Reine or Hamnoy. Aa and Nusfjord is also a very small and cosy place to stay Accommodation northern part: http://www.lofoten-startside.no/Lofoten-startside/vagan.htm I especially like Henningsvaer.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
We really have very limited time so what we are thinking of doing is driving into Svolvaer from Bodo via Skutvik and stay there one night. Look around that region. Then we want to move on to Andenes via Melbu because we want to do the whale and seal safari's (this is something we cannot get in India). Then move on through Gryllefjord to Tromso. How does this sound. Sundeep

Hi,
I saw your postings from last year about Lofoten, also mentioning you were planning to go to Tromso. My wife and I are going to Norway in June/July, but we will only have time to got to either Lofoten or Tromso region. Which do you recommend ? We'd like to do some hiking and whale watching. Thanks, Affonso
