Cambodia by train
Posted: Wed December 18, 2002 01:55 PM UTC
Hi there

I know that there is a train from Bankok as far as the Cambodian border but can I continue on to Siem Reap by train? Can I get there from Chiang Mai/ChiangRai area?

Also does anyone know how much the train costs? And how long the train takes.

Cheers

You can take a train ONLY to the Thai Cambodian border, from the border you must take a pick up truk into Siem Reap. You can get to the Thai Cambodian border from Chiang Mai by mini van, but it is easier to go to Bangkok first (there are many Chiang Mai travel agents on the streets that can get you transportation). Good Luck

Thanks - Is it easy to find a pick-up that will take you to Siem Reap at the border? How much will I be charged and how long will it take?

Thanks again

Getting the pick up truck to Siem Reap is easy, especially if you use a company, which will include it in the price and all. From the border to Siem Reap is a bumpy and uncomfortable ride (I never did it but I've heard about it from my good friend, I only went to the border by Trat). Time wise, it varries depending on season and road condition. It can take anywhere between three and ten hours from the border to Siem Reap. The total cost from Bangkok should be under 300 Baht (shop around on Khao San Road 100-300 is a fair price).

http://travel-online.to/srt/departure/east_d.htm 48 baht for 3rd class Less than 5 hours Bangkok - Aranya Prathet Poipet - Siem Reap inside the pickup truck cost me 200 Baht in March. I think the locals paid about 100 Baht to ride in the back and about 150 Baht to ride inside. It took us around 4 hours but that can be faster or slower depending on flat tires and the driver!

I read in a South East Asia tour guide that, it is not safe to travel by train inside Cambodia ATLEAST FOR TRAVELLERS. So beware. And many times, author [i don't remember] has mentioned, keep yourself near to tourists.

The price of BKK-Siem Reap is now around 500 Bath in Khao San Rd, and unfortunately often includes long unnecessary delays on both sides of the border.
