Estado de Michoacán de Ocampo Morelia/Patzcuaro -- Dia de los Muertos
Posted: Mon June 14, 2004 01:36 AM UTC
My partner's b'day is October 31st and I was thinking about taking him to Patzcuaro, and the surrounding villages. I have been to that region before, but many years ago and as a student...
Finally to the quesiton -- for hotels I was thinking La Casa de Rosas in Michoacan and La Casa de los Suenos in Patzcuaro... any other suggestions or comments on these picks... Maybe something in Erongaricuaro?

Any suggesiton would be greately appreciated.

Make your reservations now for Patzcuaro if you can. Three years ago in a "down" year I couldn't get a reservation for four people for Patzcuaro even though I think I started to try in late July. We stayed in Santa Clara de Cobre and we had a great experience. I did get reservations in Morelia for a few days prior without difficulty.
One of the great parts of our trip was a free national dance festival of students from technical schools throughout the country in three plazas in Morelia for 2 or 3 days prior to the Night of the Dead holiday. Ask about it when calling for reservations, check with the tourism department, check the internet; just do not miss it if you can be in Morelia a few days early.

We stayed at the De la Soledad in Morelia. This is a colonial style 4* place with the expected quality and authenticity at perhaps lower than expected price. I recall it to have been about 600 pesos per night for a double. They have a web site. They had a great Sunday buffet lunch which I enjoyed on this and a previous visit. This is a higher class place than I usually stay at, but it was a special trip for friends.
Santa Clara del Cobre has 3 hotels. The best is El Camino Real. 3*. This is not one of the high class Camino Real Chain, but it looked clean with modern rooms. The only thing which was strange was that it looked fairly empty when I stopped by. I would not recommend the hotel we stayed at because our room was dark, small and over priced even at about 20 dollars a night. The other small hotel on the plaza, the Oasis looked better but I never entered it. It was fully booked when I called.
Circumstances kind of forced us to stay at Santa Clara, but for us the result was great., I recall it being 30-40 minutes by taxi or bus from Patzcuaro. The town is prosperous because of the copper trade, but still with the feel of a small Mexican town. I recall particularly enjoying siting in the plaza while my wife took her siestas. bob
