Trip from Port Antonio to Negril. Nirvana hotel. Diving
Posted: Sun June 13, 2004 07:27 AM UTC
Hi, everybody,
We are going to Jamaica in august; first week we are going to spend near Port-Antonio, then, in Negril.
Would be great if somebody shares his/her experience how to get from Port-Antonio to Negril (renting a car?).
In Negril we are planning to stay in Nirvana hotel (found by internet search). If there are any disadvantages in accomodations there (according to web-cites reviews there is no any); people of what interests we can meet in the hotel, etc.
We look forward to diving in Negril area. Maybe, somebody could help us with info about reliable centers.
Thanks a lot,
Yelena

Hi Yelena,

If you're going to be driving around a fair amount it may be worth renting a car, however, it can be expensive, and the driving can be a bit of an erhmmm...adventure! I would actually suggest arranging with a taxi driver -someone that your hotel owner may know or I can email you a couple of numbers of reliable drivers I have used regularly--and have them take you to Negril (there's a lot of construction work just now on the roads between Ocho Rios and Mo bay, so it may be a lot easier to have someone else drive). If that works out fine, then you can arrange with that same driver to take you to the airport when you leave Negril, which will probably be cheaper than going through some of the more tourist-resort based taxis that can charge quite high rates (for a trip from Port Antonio to Negril a good rate would probably be around $100US ($6000J), I'm guessing, but may have gone up.

I've never been to the Nirvana, but another nice hotel in Negril I know of, which is right on the beach and has a lovely beach-side restaurant is Kuyaba (it's worth asking for an upstairs room). Their website is at: http://www.kuyaba.com/

When you're in Port Antonio I strongly suggest going to Frenchman's Cove--that's my favourite beach in that area, and is a lovely sheltered cove. And, altho' it's a bit of a tourist mecca, the Blue Lagoon is worth a visit (and definitely a swim). Rio Vista Villas in Port Antonio is also another nice alternative in terms of places to stay--with a wonderful view of the Rio Grande River (at http://www.riovistajamaica.com/).

Have a lovely stay!

Susan.

Susan,
Thanks a lot!
I am glad you mentioned Frenchman's Cove because this is our first stop.
If you email us the numbers it would be great.
Maybe, Montego bay is worth to stay for a couple of day on the way.
We are still planning the trip and look at all possible options about where, what, and etc. Our 18-year daughter joins us in hope of seeing and doing as much as possible (:
I'll check Kuyaba if they available during our trip.
Thanks again for your help.
If you have questions about trips to Egypt, Crete, Paris, Russia, pleas, ask.
Yelena

Hi,

sorry, for the delay in replying--yes, I would encourage a stop en route to Negril, it's a pretty long drive from Port Antonio. I was going to suggest stopping off say at Harmony Hall (just before Ocho Rios on the left hand side of the road) to check out the local art (upstairs) this has happy hour on fridays and an italian restaurant downstairs. Then you could spend the afternoon in Ocho Rios and have a coffee & check out the stores at Island Village (a fairly recent development by Chris Blackwell). You could then spend the night at Ocho Rios. In the morning you may want to check out the tourist mecca of Dunns River Falls--you can walk up the waterfall--just outside of Ochie--but quite fun. You could then head to Mo Bay and spend a night or two there.

I'm a bit biased--not a big fan of Ochie or Mo Bay--just cos it's a lot of big tourist all inclusives in the area, I prefer Port Antonio and Negril, but nonetheless you should get a feel for them if you're in Jamaica, and especially if you have an 18 year old along : ) She may like Margaritaville in Island Village --a bar/cafe that opens onto the beach at the back.

I will email you the taxi numbers separately.

cheers, Susan

Yelena,
Howdy from Texas.
I will also be in Jamaica the first two weeks of August. I usually travel by small commuter plane from Mobay to Negril. It takes about 1 1/2 hours off your time. I like to get settled in my Hammock quickly. I save taxi fare for the ride back to Mobay. You can grab a flight through TimAir or BurlAir. Your driver should know where they are at the airport. Cost is minimal ($65-$70 USD). If ya happen to see a long-haired hippie type walking along the beach, in Negril. Be nice & say Hi to RATBAT.
Have fun & take care.

Hi,all!

We will also be in Negril from August 8 to 13. :-)

We'll stay at Grand Lido Negril hotel and will go scuba diving, Ocho Rios river fall.

What are you going to do there?
Any recommendations?

Let's enjoy wonderful Jamaican summer :-)

Don't overplan what you want to do in Negril. It is the best place in the world to wade out into the clear warm waters of that beautiful sea and float around. You can walk the 7-mile stretch of beach to see all the different places to stay and eat (Grand Lido is an all-inclusive...which we avoid in Negril as there are so many delightful, smaller family run places with incredibly personal service...BUT I must admit GL has the best reputation among the AIs in Negril, and I know many people who have had fantastic times there.) I recommend stopping at Cosmo's for a drink and also check out the menu for my fav place Charela Inn. Over the years, they have consistently had wonderful food and service, and it's the place we have gone back to for dinner, even when staying elsewhere!

Negril is the best place in the world to decompress, de-stress and get romantic with your sweetie!

Hello Radiomom (Diane) :-)

Thank you very much for your tips..

I will remember Cosmo's and Charela Inn!
And, yes, we'd like to relax there. We will visit Ocho Rios, sometimes diving, but after that we will sleep well, read some books, chat. and see the sunset...

Wow, I can't wait.. less than 2 months to go.

Thank you again :-)

I think I remember Nirvana ... I'll have to look into my notes. I do believe there are two dive centers in Negril, you will see it is such a small place it won't take long to find anything. We've only just snorkeled there and found it to be so relaxing and much fun. There is more to see (underwater) if you go off the cliffs area, but there are boats who will take you out to the reef inexpensively.

Negril's beach really spoiled me. The sand is so clean and soft and the water is so clear and inviting.
It's been a couple years since we were last there, but about time to head back again!
