Bonjour dear VTers - Any suggestion for Hostel or cheap hotel.
Posted: Sat June 12, 2004 05:28 AM UTC
Anyone has suggestions for cheap and cool place to stay in PARIS ?

Would be great if its near tourist area. I saw Aloha hostel giving like 26 euro per night and its walking distance of Paris' most famous sights including the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysées, the Musée Rodin, the Musée des Armées and the lively Boulevard.

Anybody been to this place ? Any other suggestion besides this ?

Thank you very much.

I just have a look to their website. They lie. They are not centrally located. The hostel is located in the outskirts of Paris, in a safe area but with nothing interesting nearby.
First of all, you must know the hotel located in the Paris center are not necessarily more expensive than the other ones in the outskirts.

The tour Eiffel is 2.5 Km from your hotel. The Arc de Triomphe 3.5 KM. Musee Rodin 2 km. Musee de l'Armee 1.5 Km. The lively boulevard de Grenelle is lively mainly because there is a heavy circulation of cars.

As hostels see :
- Village Hostel : near Montmartre
- Young & Happy : 80 rue Mouffetard near the Quartier Latin
- Auberge Internationale des jeunes : 10 rue Trousseau. Near place de la Bastille

There are also budget hotels in which the single room without a private bath is at the same price than the hostel (25 to 28 euros). For example :
- Hotel Henri IV - 25 place dauphine : on ile de la Cite (difficult to be more centrally located). 5 min walk from Notre dame, Sainte Chapelle, Samaritaine (Department store), St Germain des Pres; 2min from Seine, 8 min from Quartier Latin or place du Chatelet which is the main intersection of all the metro lines and RER lines. The Paris Police head quarter is just beside : could you dream a place safer.

- Hotel Tiquetonne : 6 rue Tiquetonne - Near rue Montorgueil (where the queen Elisabeth II goes shopping), 5 min walk from les halles, 10 min from Louvre

- Hotel de Rouen : 42 rue Croix des Petits Champs. Just in front of the Banque de France Head Office. 8 min walk from Louvre

These hotels have no website. You must phone.

Have a good stay

Hey Ray thank you so much for your info. I am in the midst of deciding whether to travel Europe by my own ( backpacking ) or getting a 20 days European Experience Contiki tour. Of course its more expensive I guess than travelling on your own. But backpacking can be a real task when you dont have the luxury of time. Sigh

Well , I guess this is some disadvantages of do-it your self thing , you have got to check so many things and verify them. Whats the cheapest way of travelling around Europe, Eurail or those flights by Easy jet and other no frill airline.

Once again thank you so much ray and hope I can catch a drink or two with you, the Doc and others .

Hi Kenyneo,

Great that you're traveling to Paris (remember : Brussels is only one hour and a half from there by train, you're welcome ;-).

I was there not so long ago and found a cheap hotel through this website : http://www.ratestogo.com/ You can find a nice hotel at a low price. And if you need any help about the locations, you can still ask on VT ;-) By the way, even if it's not at a walking distance from the touristic places, the public transportation system is well organised.

Good luck and good trip !

Hey Ray , is that the only way to Paris ? Waht about thru ferry DOver-Calais kinda route ? I saw in COntiki tour , would it be cheaper ? Plus I get to look around some cool places along the way if any ?

Hmm...travelling around Euro is really really expensive or maybe because my home currenycy is so low comparatively. Anyway thank you all for lending a hand ..well this is the best part of VT !

hi

I stayed at Auberge Internationale des jeunes, it's aa nice place to stay: close to the metro station, clean and full of backpackers from all over the world. Its rate was the lowest among all the hostels I could search from the internet in summer 2001.

Enjoy Europe, enjoy backpacking!!!

cheers,
backpackerbaby

AIJ rue Trousseau is a sympathetic hostel.
There is a real night life in rue de Lappe nearby.
You must be careful at night in some parts of Place de la Bastille which can be unsafe.

I'm a fan of the BVJ Louvre (http://bvjhotel.com/) - it's incredibly central (right next to the Louvre and near 2 metro stations, as well as the Chatelet/Les Halles train station), and cheap! Also, it's probably the only Paris hostel with a reputation for cleanliness that has no lockout and no curfew.

There are some quirks - the environment isn't extremely social, and the push-button showers are annoying, but all in all, the combination of price, location, and cleanliness make it worthwhile. Oh, and the giant cups of hot chocolate in the morning, along with unlimited baguettes, don't hurt ;)

You can read some comments here:
http://www.hostelz.com/display.php/62+BVJ+Louvre

It's not terribly close to the points of interest that you mentioned, but those are all a short metro ride away. On the other hand, it's right by the Louvre, Rue de Rivoli, Notre Dame, and a load of other stuff in walking distance.

dear all , thank you for all the comments ...

HOSTELs
_______

I have a few more questions here ...while Ray's Henry IV hotel looks so tempting but without a websiet looks daunting to me ..do they speak English ? Can I make reservation thru phone .

While VT Omisan's BVJ Louvre looks equally tempting , I saw they have one in Latin Quater as well.

But guys can you help me to decide which is a best place to stay so I can stroll around for beautiful night scenes ? I am not a party animal so disco is off for me ( except some pubbing , not a frequent pub goer as well ) . So which place to stay allows me to walk around and enjoy the beautiful night scenes ( love taking pics ) . I dont wanna wander off too far coz I am alone .

"Journées du Patrimoine"

Btw Ray and others , do you guys have an Idea where I can find an English site for activities during the "Journées du Patrimoine , besides visiting Chirac's house ...( hope the carpet is cleaner now after ray's comment :-) )

I wanna know what are the activities and which monuments or museum are gonna be free . Sigh I will turn 26 a month before my trip , so there goes my discounts ...hahahah

AUTOMNE FESTIVAL
