If you don't already have a place to stay, I would suggest you get a well situated hotel in Downtown.
The Barclay Hotel
1348 Robson St
Vancouver, BC V6E1C5
Phone: (604) 688-8850
Is on Vancouvers best shopping street and it's a bargain. Usually less than $100Canadian even at peak season. It's older and not fancy but excellent location.
A slightly better hotel on Robson St. is www.bluehorizonhotel.com I think rooms are available around $140 a night.
And my all time favourite is www.sylviahotel.com
It's an older hotel on English Bay, but it has a new wing as well. Rooms are available for just under $100Canadian but can go quite a bit higher if you get a fancier room.
Any one of these hotels will put you within walking distance of Stanley Park, Robson St. Shopping, Theaters, Art Gallery. And very safe area to walk at all times.

I would definitely suggest you go to North Vancouver and see the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
And while your in North Vancouver go to Grouse Mountain and take the Gondola to the top. There's a beautiful restaurant there for dinner or drinks (and no snow) and if you time it right, you can watch the sun set on the city and then see Vancouver light up as night approaches.

Whistler Mountain is less than two hours away and very beautiful. If you get there early enough you can take the Gondola to the top and have a beautiful brunch and the wander over to the Horstman Glacier, and if it's as warm as last year you'll see people sliding down it to cool off, and some people will be skiing it.
Have fun.

Take a two days side trip to Victoria on Vancouver Island. So much to see and do there - it's a must.
My 3 favorites in Vancouver (mainland) are Stanley park, grouse mountain, and Robson street
Have fun

Walking
#1 Stanley Park- you can walk or rent bike or rollerblades to go around the seawall. Make you stop at the totem poles, Prospect Point and the Vancouver Aquarium.
$2 Granville Island- near the end of the seawall around Burrad Street you can hop on the water taxi and it will take you to Granville Island.
#3 SHOPPING on Robson Street - indoor and outdoor exotic restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques.
#3- Chinatown

Driving

#1- Whistler- an hour or so drive but worth every minute of it
#2-Capilano Suspension Bridge- one of Vancouver's most popular tourist attraction. Around the same area you can check out the Lynn Canyon Park which also has a suspension bridge and not commericalized as the Capilan Suspension. What I like best about Lynn Canyon is that it is FREE!!!!
#3 Grouse Mountain

The above are just a few of my personal favourites.
I"m sure you will enjoy your trip.

Hello, someone mentioned eariler about a restaurant
on top if Grouse Mtn., it's the Observatory Restaurant.
Very nice place, fantastic service and food. Absolutely
stunning view of Vancouver when the city lights come on after sunset. You my friend must call this # NOW
for reservations 1-604-984-0661 Seats are limited
so please call as soon as you get this message.
If booked up, don't quit, take the gondola up anyway
just to see the sights from the rest's outdoor patio.Good luck
Next, if you decide to take the "Sea To Sky Highway"
to Whistler, stop at Shannon Falls and Brandywine
Falls. both are right on the highway, well, they require
some walking..
Finially, if you stop at Prospect Point inside Stanley Park, then have lunch at Prospect Point Cafe. The
Grayline Tour Bus actually stops there. So get off,
have lunch and a few Mission Hill Merlots and get back on and continue your tour of Vancouver.
Enjoy your visit, another good place for a "formal"
dinner is the 5 Sail Restaurant located inside
Canada Place, but be ready to shove out the dough.

take binoculars with you where ever you go.
If you you do go to whistler, shortly after you pass through squamish you will see a huge rock face on your left (I've heard it called the stawamish chief) and you might notice a picnic pull out spot with people gawking at the huge rock face. With your binoculars you'll see people clinging to the rock face.
